dude, Holland is awesome (from what i hear). A place where anything illicit is legal is a place i want to be near (Amsterdam only, right?). I also understand that it is a very beautiful country, in terms of scenery.

You know, Amsterdam is actually pretty stable, right? I mean, they dont have higher murder rates or anything. That should prove to us that legalizing drugs shouldnt change us too much. I mean, people who havent done drugs yet probably wont do them if they were legalized. The only difference would be higher prices and no jail time.

I think it would be a nice place to live. Since it is a low profile country, i would never have to worry about terrorist attacks or invasion. But that stuff probably wont happen to me, here in the US.

Holland? Hey, my Nazi History lecturer is from Holland. Well, the Netherlands. The two are the same, right? But yeah. she's a specialist in the history of Dutch neutrality.

But, you're right, there is a bit of an obsession with Holland, particularly when it comes to World War II and the Nazi Occupation. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Anne Frank lived and wrote in Nazi-occupied Holland/Nederland, and since she made one of the most famous WWII documents, an inordinate amount of focus has been put on the Netherlands in terms of Nazi occupied europe. It'd be nice to see some more attention on Czechoslovakia, or Poland... but, there just aren't as many high-profile primary sources from those countries, so it'll probably never happen.

Holland, also known as 'the Netherlands', is actually doing quite ok. Recent studies say that is has one of the best free media in the world, and besides that the county is proof that soft drug legalization doesn't cause more hard drug users and more crime. I think the Netherlands is doing a rather good job.

However it has a lesser shining side. I find it to be rather bureaucratic sometimes. And some of the politicians are just small minded dorks. The last few years the Netherlands have gone down a bit, education got a bit worse, politics are a joke and everything is turning a bit more to the right, what I like to call the facist-pigs side, yet that is exaggerated. Good news is that with elections coming up, I think the Netherlands might take the right course again. Every country has it's ups and downs.

About our current minister-president. He a total retard. But hey, that's life. At least the fact that we have like a dozen of political parties to chose from means that we can chose more then just 'sucky' and 'more sucky' like in the USA, we can chose 'Nice ideology but idiots', 'totally stuck up but ok', 'liberal scum yet good for economics' and much, much more other parties.

I know that on stuff like porn or computers or kytes (non-fundamental-needed-stuff) we pay 19% extra in the shop. On food like 8%. But I thought they all changed that recently.

I think that in the higher tax scales, like if you make 100.000 euro's, you pay 50% tax. But since the kabinet that has been in power the last 5-6 years it might have dropped. In the 60's, abover a certain amount you paid about 100% tax. Good old times.

I might be way of on the current numbers. All I know is that americans pay way less tax, but that is why there are more then a million people living in trailers.

That's a lot!

In the UK the first £4,895 you earn is tax free. The next £0-2,090 you earn is taxed at 10%. Then anything else you earn up to £32,400 is taxed at 22%. Then anything you earn over £32,400 is taxed at 40%.

Thats just the basics for income tax.

So if you earn £50,000 for example you'll be taxed:

£4,895 @ 0%
£2,090 @ 10% = £209.00
£30,310 @ 22% = £6,668.20
£12,705 @ 40% = £5,082.00
£50,000 is taxed @ £11,959.20 so you'd take home £38,040.80

A variable GST? That's unusual... over here, goods and services are taxed at a flat rate of 12.5%. They tax alcohol, cigarettes, and other "harmful" stuff more though.

Wow. Here, it works similarly. The average tax rate (income tax) is about 30% I think, but if you earn shitloads, you can get taxted up to about 40% I think...

Goods and services tax (GST) or Value Added Tax (VAT) in England is 17.5%. Some things are 0% like food, water, books, newspapers, transport. You get taxed a lot in Holland!

Haha. The Netherlands in general has a low murder rate, but Amsterdam .. especially the "Bijlmer" (the "ghetto") .. it's pure crap. A lot of murders, people get killed for a couple of euros or a bike, or even an iPod a couple of months ago.

Indeed, we have such a small country with only so few important buildings, a terrorist attack would not inflict much fear upon the world here. We're safe from natural hazards, terrorist attacks, and we're rich (The Netherlands is a very rich country).

Duude. Get your facts straight. I think you're talking about Hitler, who is from Germany, who is Deutsch, not Dutch. Big difference. We're neighbour countries. Holland has never pulled off anything like that.

God.. I so hope you're joking right now. We have free press, our leader is dumb, but definitely not dictator-ish. He's more of a suckup with Bush and a weak guy than anything else. I think you're the only one that has his facts straight. Yes, Holland and The Netherlands are the same country, just different names. Even when Holland was occupied with Nazis, we hardly killed anybody.

It's 19% on most stuff, except for bread and some other food, which is 8% iirc.

Hello Seeker. I of course respect you and your web site, but I disagree with your post. We are not engaging in senseless banter. We are engaging in very sensical banter, though it is satire. We are illustrating our political philisophical position on the obsession with the United States, something that has been brought up a great deal up to this point, even in this particular forum. The Philosophy forum and the Extended Discussion forum have been used lately to turn your web site into an America bashing site. I think the stuff I have seen has been extremely offensive, and it just keeps coming and coming. With this thread, I am using satire to point out the philosophical nature of such a thing. In other words, I am demonstrating its illogic, absurdity, and other bizarrities that are relevant to philosophical discussion. I love this web site, but I want to tell you that the constant bashing of my country while it is in the midst of the greatest crisis it has ever known is downright despiccable, and it is probably not winning over too may American lucid dreamers, and it seems that Americans provide the biggest pool of candidates for becoming involved here.

Well, Americans are not obsessed with Holland by any means, although there are the stoners who want to go to Amsterdam for a few days and smoke their righteous buds. And I don't hear constant talk about Holland in the news. I would find it so incredibly odd if Americans started going off about Holland in all kinds of ways all the time. I don't even know who their leader is. I have yet to even hear his name one time. There is not some major obsession with Holland. If there is, why isn't it showing itself on this very worldly site? I am not talking about a few mentionings. I am talking about the sort of thing that is happening with the United States.

But don't get me wrong. I like Holland. They have some cool aspects, especially Amsterdam. But it would be such a loser move of me to wrap my life up in Holland when I live on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean from Europe. If I knew damn well that Holland would be the first country we turn to if we ever get invaded, I would really be pathetic for obsessing my life over insulting Holland.

I find this site very interesting. It's too bad if they ban me because they THINK i am someone else. Really the only reason i came here was to read about methods of lucid dreaming. Until i saw some of these topics.

It's because those of us with really good jobs want to give others incentive to improve their lot in life. I have friends in the Netherlands, professionals like me. Difference is, I pay 15% income tax, they pay about 50%. We both make approximately the same wage, I just get to keep more of mine

Where is the incentive to strive harder for that promotion or to work those long extra hours away from family and a nice comfortable bed if the government is only going to take it away and give it to someone else?

Nederlanders are garunteed an imcome of around $16K, and given free medical, right? Even if they don't work?

And Seeker, perhaps Americans with good jobs have it better in america, but on average I think Dutch people have it better. The last few years in America the minimum wage hasn't changed a bit, while higher income all climbed giganticly. I don't know for sure, but I think there are Alot of people in america flippin' burgers for minimum wage.

Back to the Netherlands, we did get trampled during the second world war. We kind of expected to be left out of it, like we were in the first world war. But Hitler was such a bitch he tramped our troops. Well at least we were a small country, unlike france that got its ass kicked just as fast and hard

And personally I think the Netherlands suck, but of all countries in the world, they are certainly one of the least suckiest.
