if you have ever watched threshold they had a alien species that basically change human double helix DNA to triple helix DNA. if scientist were able to successfully do this meaning that we would be stronger, faster, smarter extrodinary sense e.t.c. and it has been tested on human and their no side effect. would you change your DNA to the superior triple helix DNA i.e. evolve.

First: Love your avatar, Hubble images are beautiful!

Second: Apparently there are meditation techniques (takes a while) which can change your DNA helix... Can't remember how... something to do with the number 16... >_<

To answer directly, hell yes.

Of course, especially if no-one else could.

ummm ... the whole point of the double helex is so that your DNA can replicate into two aditional, identical molecules.

three would only allow you to replicate cells three at a time

I think what you ment was add in a new gene or two.

to answer ... dependsd on the trate? some yes, some no

i dont think that it would make us better in anyway i think that it just would give us more features and build on the old ones...or over generations it may speed up evolution more quickly, which could lead to it being a bad thing because this new evolution may look or be alot different to us...

But hey ill be willing to try it, i mean if no harmful side effects are guranteed then i will try it...

keeper:

i'm fairly new at this (just got it at school)

but: if that's true, then cells could divide into 3 cells instead of pairs...

and cells can only divide a certain couple of times before they can't do that anymore, and die, right? your body has a certain limit to how much times it's cells can replicate, and then you die... right?

now if you'd have a triple helix dna structure... wouldn't you just die faster? because the replication limit is reached faster?

just my thought....

im pretty ok in calculas if we did have three cell divided every time then it will increase expodentailly and outway the cell that dye by a large number.
how would a triple helix make you stronger, faster and have smarter extrodinary sense[/b]
their is more chemical being made by DNA so the effect of tetrestorone and other chemical increase.

One word... NO

Cancer is basically the condition where a gene is damaged during cell reproduction. With that increased complexity, they risk of a bad copy goes WAY up.

yes according to research this would happen or cell division would not take place however lets say scientist got rid off this problem i.e. no side effects.

yeah but how do you know that the triple helix will make the body itself more complex, and possibly stronger therefore it may cause immunity to cancerous cells...

DNA would have to be completly overhalled for this to work

the molecules are only compatable in a double form, so new molecules would have to be made from scratch

more variation faster evolution, less change of getting recessive gene as you need three recessive gene then two so meaning taller people people e.t.c., if their was a genetic dominant disease it effect will become worse because it get expressed more because their more DNA to work with, more DNA means more chemical can be made like adnaline, growth inhanced more chemical bigger, intelligence inhanced more neurochemical e.t.c.

this is correct. This will proberly have the most effect as our human characteristic will change significulty.

If there was a technique which would rid the human species of all illness and give us heightened senses, would you take it?

If scientists could guarantee no side effects in you or your offspring, would you take it?

If someone walked up to you in the street and gave you a million dollars, with all the paperwork that proved it wasn't bad money, would you take it?

Probably.

With the way humans are compelled to always go further it is more than probable that we will see the advent of an "engineered" human.
With the process of manipulating DNA and singling out bad genes we will become a genetically engineered society......................For the rich.
This will further divide our classes.

Thought to ponder:
Your kid was born healthy and He/she excelled in sports.
-The new kid in town has been genetically engineered to be able to hold more oxygen in his blood. That and among other DNA improvements that (wealthy neighbor) had their child engineered has all the trophies on his/her wall.

See where I am going. Staying Human in an engineered age.
Where would, in the psyche of this young kid have a sense of self worth?

I would much rather run a marathon and finish last knowing I gave it MY all rather than my parents giving me the unnatural tools to do so.

If given such an option, I would certainly take it. Honestly, eventually I think people are going to evolve through scientific means.

I don’t believe it will happen through a triple helix though. Genetic engineering is still in its infancy. We can still find many results from this, which includes improved performance and escaping a particular disorder that may be in our genes. In fact, gender can already be decided before birth. It is expensive to do this, but it can be done. Taking these things into account, it shows how we are no longer leaving everything in the hands of nature. Of course, many of these things will not be commercially exploited for a while. I think this will be a lot more reliable and safer in the long run though.

Based on the argument of status, I believe this will eventually happen either way. Might not happen in our lifetime, but I really wouldn’t be surprised if it does. Let’s just hope the generations following this one are instilled with a sense of respect for everyone around them, for they do not command the land, they share it.

I dont see the point in asking us to take something that has no 'risks'. If it really has no risks or side effects then it will never exist on this planet, it is the same as asking if we want magical powers on a magical planet. Everything can have side effects, everything can have risks. And when those side effects haven't been discovered yet its even more dangerous to do it - would you have an operation without first knowing the risks?

The first risk is clear, you can die in the process. So long as the process is invented by humans and handled by humans and especially dealing with something that is so essential to your existance *YOUR DNA* if they make any small mistake - thats it - its over.

There is no Soma!
