I'm not sure if this belongs here or not but I was just curious as to what everyone thought about the idea of fate. Do you believe that everything happens for a reason, and that everyone's destiny is already pre-determined? As for myself, I was raised in a christian family and have had christianity shoved down my throat. Am I a christian myself? No. I was taught that god is all knowing and already knows the future and what you will do, what you will become, how you will die, etc. I'm sure many people here are christians simply because in my mind, that is the most popular religion. So with that said, it would seem as though everyone has a destiny based on that religion. Whatever choices you make in life, god would know that those were the choices you would make all along. Therefore you were destined to make that choice, and all those after leading all the way to your death. I am not familiar enough with any other religions to know whether or not their gods are the same way, but I would asume so. This topic is not for christians only or anything like that, but that was just one example that I had on my mind. Just let me know what you guys think.

Hmm I don't think that the idea of determinism is consistent with current scientific paradigm... The determinism idea ran that if it were possible to know every single piece of minute information about the universe for any given moment, then the events of the next moment could be determined. This was ok with classical physics, but then Quantum Theory came along. Quantum uncertainty shows that the path of an electron cannot be determined - two seperate experiments with identical circumstances will produce different results. This means that determinism fails - outcomes cannot be predicted, no matter how much information is gathered.

From a more spiritual viewpoint determinism is also problematic. For a while Christianity pushed a belief of fate or determinism: ie, God already had his plans for you, and whatever happens in an individual's life is therefore fate and nothing can be done about it. The problem here is that if people's lives are already determined by God, there are obviously some people condemned to hell regardless of their own actions. How do people know if they are going to hell or not? If they are going to hell there is nothing that can be done, and forgiveness seems to be useless. It's not quite such a popular view in Christianity anymore.

First of all: Respect for being mentally strong enough to be able to have a different way of thinking then your parents. I always feel bad for the people that are agnostic/atheist/different religion living in a Christian family... But I feel even more sad for the people that never even have the ability to make a choice, growing up in a religious family.

Anyhow: The question of fate. The question of fate, I think, Is the question of an intelligent designer. I Do not believe in a higher being, and certainly not that would be weird enough to create this world, full of misery and unfairness, but that would have to power to change it, but choose not to.

I have a theory that time dose not exist and all things are ever-present in an existential basis. Suggesting that every thing is fated. These exist in a dimension we cannot perceive of or really fathom.
Space time warping suggests to me that every thing is absolutely connected, the past the future etc is all in the present moment .
What was is and shall be. All that is to be, is and has been. This is not religious to me at all just a way to demand of the question... Who are we, why are we here, and where are we going? whats our fate?

This is my opinion.

I don't think theres an answer to this because we will never know if things are supposed to happen, unless we some how create time machine and be able to successfully change time, but I doubt that'll ever happen. I think that what ever happens will happen and what doesn't happen won't. That is worded badly I know but I don't know how to put it.

Yeah that's a very good point. I think whatever course life take you then that's where you'll end up. But you have to respect nature and universal law. It doesn't matter if you're Christian, Atheist or agnostic or whatever, because universal law doesn't discriminate. You reap what you sow in this life, Things may not catch with you today or tomorrow, but believe me it will, you just better hope it's not a one shot deal.

What if the universal law hates Christians? Don't forget that to like 60% of the worlds population, it are lies. I myself think it is a lie. Or do you think universal law doesn't hate lies? Like lies about how the jews were inferior?

I agree Christian Fundamentalists are bad.

However, don't you think you are looked upon as 'wrong' too? By either other religions, atheist or agnostic hippies?

I don't have the same beliefs as people in christendom, For instance they believe in the Tirnity whereas I do not. But everyone else puts us all in the same category. It doesn't bother me.

I just find it hilarious that atheists, although unorganized, often agree a whole lot more with each other then Christians, who all seem to have 'their own true version'.

That's because atheist really don't have anything to agree on besides the fact that you all feel that God doesn't exist, and your life is meaningless. As a whole there's really not that much complexity there, ya think

My life in meaningless

Well good that you told me the divine truth of that, because I never felt that way I think a rainbow isn't less beautiful once I understand how it works, I think it is even more beautiful to know that it are 'just' drops of water bending light.

Also, I am glad we agree that 99.5% or more of the Christians have it wrong. Since hell Doesn't exist, and Jesus Didn't die on the cross.

However, I do think that about 10% of the worlds population has a clear mind and accepts the most likely. The atheist. You however have only a handfull of people that have the same views you have.

To play the old Christian guilt/smear trick: Your life must be Pointless, friendless and saaaad Hear that sound? It is jesus Crying over your mislead ideas of him Not dying on the cross

Seeing your view point is even more rare then mine, what are the odds you are wrong. Aren't they at least larger then my odds to be wrong?

Telling atheist their life is pointless ha. All what you life for is in your mind and only in your mind.

Are you fat so jesus can see the difference between you and children starving in Africa, or are you muscular because you need it to turn the other cheek a lot?

No, no, no, ya see, christians don't believe in odds. Odds are far too similar to chance and chance scares them.

They are scary indeed : ( At night, I just pray to jesus the 'facts' and the 'odds' don't come out of their books and attack me. That is why I burned all my books and moved to the bible-belt of America.
