I disagree. If everyone strived to make big waves with big actions (i.e. light bulb, cure for smallpox, equality for all, etc. etc.) then we would be nowhere humane. Small things make a difference too. Not everyone can invent ingenious things, or fight enough to make a big difference.

In my opinion, if I can make one person's life better, make one person happier, give one starving kid on the side of the road a hamburger I'm not going to eat, smile at one sad girl, say hello to one lonely boy, then I've made a difference that counts, and I can wake up every morning and look myself in the mirror.

There's a story in the bible about Jesus coming as a beggar to a woman's door to ask for food, and she turns him away saying she's saving the bread for Jesus, well that inspired me (even though I'm not Christian) to try and make a difference. What if that girl I smiled at was considering suicide? Then my smile saved a life, and that's a noble thing.

I understand what you are saying but i do not think that i wrote my views down accurately, if smiling at someone can prevent them from commiting suicide then i would call that a large/important action, it may not be world defining but it is still an action that helps a person in a large way...obviously my true aim is to benefit the entire world for the best, but i am not saying that small changes do not make a difference, if i could help anyone in any way then i would, but i will always be aiming to make a large, positive difference to everyones lives, although it may not happen, the fact is that i tried my very best and "burned as brightly as possible"...

I think that should be the gist of your argument, if everyone based everything they did on that one principle, we'd all be in a much better place, whether the best they could do was curing cancer, or peeling potatoes quickly.

How can you possibly know that bacteria don't have emotions ? Bacteria have a drive that makes them want to survive and that drive must come from some sort of instinct to survive, you can't have that instinct without some sort of intelligence and with that intelligence comes emotion (you can't be brain dead and have emotions). Obviously that intelligence is not as developed as our own or any other creature but science has proven the intelligence or rather group intelligence of bacteria, they will only live in places best suited for their survival whether that would be mutualistic, through parasitism or commenalism.
