Well that's not quite true, it just seems like I've paused time.

Sometimes, usually when I'm reading, I start thinking about something for a couple minutes. Except after that, I suddenly realize that it wasn't a couple minutes, it was actually more like a second!

Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone know why? (And if it's possible to do it whenever I want -- like so I can do my math homework faster than a computer I doubt it though)

My guess is our brains aren't normally working at their top speed. Or to do what I did they have to concentrate on a specific thing without having to worry about all sorts of other, uh, processes (seeing, hearing, etc.), because I know the same thing happens in dreams sometimes.

Perceptual Time Dilation. A common phenomenon. I'd go into more details, but I know jack about it other than what it is.

I searched Google and found a topic on dreamviews about it : http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/inde...howtopic=40628

But is it normal for time to go as slow as 1 second == 2 minutes?

I remember in basic photography you have to count several stops for different steps. some steps were 15 seconds, some 30 seconds, others a minute, others several minutes.

I was all alone in the lab and I was bored out of my mind watching the second hand. at several moments the second hand would speed up, or slow down to the point I wanted to scream.

I also experience this a lot when I am waking up from a dream. time seems to go by so quickly when really only a minute has passed.

Quite possible. I'm sure you could have a lucid last a billion years, if you didn't mind not remembering much from the intervening time. Merlock made a thread on this... you can measure time as fast or slow as you like. What's actually limited is how much you do and think in that time.
Ten years without a dream, now starting almost from scratch.

We're messing with our bodies on a very low level here - can we break them? What will it take to hurt ourselves?

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.

Question

I ask a question in response to your question....
Are you sure "time" exists?
Or is it a perceptual limitation. It seems to be more of a rule that can be bent or in some cases even broken then a constant variable, which you have illustrated for us.

Time dilation? I doubt that is the concept in this case.

Conceptual thought however makes sense in the matter:
http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/inde...howtopic=44723

Especially check my last post there. Conceptual thought isn't just used in dreams. It is the ultimate form of thought used by the mind. We use it when we really think about something. At those times we don't use verbal thought or any such - we use conceptual thought instead and it takes far, significantly less time.

Well if you really think you can stop time try this http://youtube.com/watch?v=RGatCTAiOFU or this http://youtube.com/watch?v=NZrs3jKtOoE well if you can't do anyone of them then your normal. Losing track of time is normal as I normally find myself confused as to what day it is.

I have the same thing happen to me when I can't go back to sleep at 4:00 AM. I will look at the clock one minute, then wait for what seems like hours and look at the clock again, and only 5 minutes will have passed! It is really frustrating.

And, Jeremysr, that is strange. Usually when I zone out, I lose time.

Time is relative, the faster you go, the slower everything else is ect. I usually find that if I fall over or some thing "dangerous" happens you see it in slow motion.

In any event, while you may be able to slow your perception of time, you cannot halt its progression.

I can do the 2nd one I think. Every night I find it hard to sleep so I listen to trance music to get rid of the boredom, trying to get to sleep. But sometimes I can't get to sleep at all the whole night. And it happened 3 different times that I close my eyes and suddenly open them 3 hours later but it felt like a second (or an "instant"). I'm pretty sure I didn't just fall asleep because

- I didn't remember dreaming at all
- In my memory I had just closed my eyes a second ago and opened them
- I couldn't get to sleep at all those nights
- I've never had the same feeling by just sleeping normally

Maybe the trance music helped?

Well you have the idea that you can go forward in time so their no point arguing about this. See your abillity is to go forward in time a few hours it is useless abillity. Think about it what possible use would you want for going forward in time a few hours unless your really bored. Now if I was you I would look really hard at a clock and meditate trying to make time go backwards. Now if you can't control your supposed abillity and you can only travel forward a few hour then it is a pretty stupid abillity.
Reminds me of people who claim they have telekinesis and can only move the Psi wheel or small objects. One of the most useless abillities ever. See if you can't do the big stuff then forget it.
Well I once had the idea I could fly so I put my supposed abillity to the test. Now instead of crap stuff I got a really high place and jumped from it. I could either fly or hit the ground and make my legs hurt for ages. Well I hit the ground.

I don't believe in time travel though. I believe that I can speed up time by slowing down my brain and slow down time by speeding up my brain. So to go backward, I'd have to think at a negative speed. So I don't think it's possible to go backward in time.

What I'd like is to voluntarily slow down time so I could do things like

- make decisions about stuff instantly (I often sit through a whole art class at school while thinking of what to draw)
- do math instantly
- have more time to think when playing games/sports

His ability was to gain time - get several minutes for a second. And any ability is useless before you've practiced.

I wonder how strong your legs would have to be to tread air?

Yeah totally, I once had a motorbike accident where time was a bit wavy warped. I saw the car turn in front of me, and in an instant knew that I didn't have time to stop or swerve, and that I was going to hit him. Time was incredibly slow as I came to hit the car (even though I was doing about 60 miles and hour and he was about 10 metres in front of me), and I relaxed my body in anticipation of the collision, and all of a sudden there was this insanely loud noise BANG as I hit the car. In what felt like 20 minutes I saw the world flip over twice as I soared through the air, and then return to normal as I lay on the tar in peak traffic.

Anyway, the way I found dreamviews was through a progression of research starting at time perception. I found some interesting theories and "proofs" and my understanding basically is that time isn't a constant flowing motion, it is like a sine wave almost with peaks and troughs etc. where it is perceived as being quicker and slower etc. etc.

Your experience is just relativity at work, isn't it? Our perception of time is not constant.

It's like the old adage: "Time flies when you're having fun." and its inverse - that time "drags" when you're bored. There's no alteration in the passage of time, it's only a perceptual phenomena.

There are a number of philosophers that have written on this subject, and oddly enough I wrote a paper on it! I got a good grade on it, not to mention the fact that it is one of the more enjoyable papers I have written. I've never used the attachment feature on these forums... but it seems easy enough. If you have time for a 6-page read... check it out, I'd love to hear what you have to say about it. I don't wanna thread-jack though, so just PM me what you have to say (unless it's relevant).

Even though I spent many hours (many many hours... reading about this stuff takes a while) reserching it, the only thing I can say conclusively is that there is enough dissension about the subject of time that at this point (and probably forever) there is no widely accepted theory, so anything is possible.

Something I find fascinating is when I first wake up from a really awesome dream that I totally have to finish is when I'm lying there, thinking about a great ending, but then I get concerned about the time, so I roll over and look at the clock, only to find that a really small amount of time seems to have gone by. Perhaps the brain works faster in the mornings?

Wow, it happened to a fictious character in a book.
This often happens to me when I'm meditating. I meditate for what feels like an hour and it's only ten minutes, and sometimes the other way around.
