Do we have a general definition for "alive" we are adhering to here?

With the emergence of Mad Cow disease, the only thing that defines something as alive is that is can reproduce.

Whenever it is concious is when it would be close to "alive". Once computers are aware of their own existence, we are doomed. What if they don't like us?

I wasn't aware that bacteria was conscious.

In that case of course computers are alive. I'm quite sure we can create self replicating programs. So are they really alive?

Anything that can store, retrieve, and use information is alive.

Sounds like a computer to me. Using this assumption, our computers are alive .

      Yes.

No. Your hard drive cannot retrieve or utilize information, merely store.

But your computing device as a whole is alive.

Actually, it can. It retrieves data every time it is requested to do so, and passes that data back on the cable that comes out of it. It also utilizes data, otherwise it wouldn't know how to interpret the requests.

Looks like you're going to have to revise your definition again.

No it doesn't, it stores it, the rest of the computer retrieves from it and utilizes it.

You need two halves to make a whole.

And even if your hard drive could do that, then it meets my requirements and is alive.

      What?

You insit that a hard drive is alive on its own.

It isn't. It is apart of a larger system-- your computer.

No, I don't. I am merely demonstrating where your logic leads. If you couldn't tell, I don't agree with your definition in the slightest.

And it leads to... The definition of life? I don't follow

I'll make it as plain as I can.

You defined life as anything that exchanges and uses information. Where that logic leads is: my hard drive is alive, which surprised you for some reason.

If anyone else in this thread had trouble with that, please raise your hand.

Hmm... SmarterChild (AIM bot) is alive! It can talk to me, show emoticons, ask me things such as what they mean, etc. I suppose if someone put a chess feature into smarterchild it would be alive, then!

PS: According to you a snake is not alive. Well... it can't talk can it?

No, that is not my list of conditions.

      Anything that is alive can:

      - Store information
      - Retrieve that information
      - and Use that information

A hard Drive can only Store information, and can be retirieved FROM.

It itself cannot retrieve that information and use it because the hard drive is the computer's storage method.

      Get it right.

I forgot the main thing: It must be able to learn on it's own. Self learning. and non dependent on humans to survive.

Artificial intelligence is still intelligence. i.e. SmarterChild can learn and is alive. Computers in general can learn. Also, are you saying my pet dog, which depends on me, is not alive? If I leave it alone in the house it will die. Furthermore, computers (smarterchild) can live on its own. Give it a non-human dependent power source (wind/solar) and leave it be.
