can you unconsciously make a conscious decision? The vs is obvious
What do you mean? Depends what type of conscious decision. Many of our day to day conscious decisions are repetitive in our day life that we can mostly do them "unconsciously."
No. I don't think so.
It would be a paradox.
First you'll have to define conscious and unconscious decisions.
On the one hand, I would say that I make unconscious conscious decisions every time I have a lucid dream. On the other, I would say any decision is a conscious decision. Anything unconscious is a reaction and does not include a deciding mechanism.
I kind of agree with the above. This is like asking us "Can you paint a red fence blue and still have it be red?"
Well can you? I know I can. :P
The only thing less meaningful than the post content is the post title. I guess people have to stash the excess of punctuation from all the txting somewhere. ;)
I think the OP means that you subconsciously decide on something you've been milling over consciously all this time. Isn't that what people mean by "just follow your gut"?
My cousin once said that he looked back on when he cheated on his girlfriend and realized that he subconsciously did it so his girlfriend would find out and break up with him, which she did. (His girlfriend was a real bitch, so don't hold it against him.) I can see what he is saying. I guess that is a case of unconsciously making a conscious decision. The decision was conscious, but the reason the decision was made was unconscious.
Just read a (German) article about newest research that showed that decisions are not, as previously found through research, made unconsciously some hundred milliseconds before you make them consciously but actually often times up to 7 seconds, for example when deciding which button of 2 to press randomly.
Of course it always depends on the involvement of rational thought in the decision, how much it is controlled by the unconscious. ...whether you have a number of categories by which to judge the alternatives quantitatively or whether you're just doing it "how you feel is right".
