Well, the title pretty much explains it.
I've been thinking a lot about purpose...
...not my purpose, but more like the world's purpose, and why are we here?
I'm not going to tell you my religion, ( although a few of you know ) because I want answers from many different people.
(Reason =/= Perpose)
First of all, I don't know what the reason is for the universe existing , but as for the perpose of the universe and us, I don't see why there would be one. Even if there was, we don't know what it is so it shouldn't matter to us, and even if we did know, who says we have to accomplish that perpose? Decide your own perpose in life. The universe was probably caused by some scientific accident, so we should just make the most of it and get whatever we can out of life while we have the chance. Oh yeah, and humans are incredibly insignificant on a universal scale, so it's not like we're all special and have some noble duty to fulfill as a species. :lol: nuh uh.
The purpose of our existence and the existence of the universe? There isn't one, the concept of "purpose" is a human creation.
However, there is a difference between the purpose of our existence and the purpose of our lives. Our purpose in life, as all life, is to "go forth and multiply", recreate, reproduce, have sex. Call it what you want.
Think about it, everything you do is in some way or another designed to attract (in most cases) the opposite sex.
It could be debated whether or not humans are insignificant on a cosmic scale. We think we're probably not alone in the universe because it is so vast, therefore there must be many other civilizations. However, if we are alone, then we may have "some noble duty to fulfill as a species" after all - because if we are alone, then it's only through our eyes that the universe can become self-aware. If we are alone, then we are the ones who must create God.
And yes, the procreation thing is important. Without it, how could we fullfil our noble purpose? ;)
I like that, I was going pitch in and say that reproducing as a purpose of existance might not be that... purposeful.. life just tends to get wiped out too often on this planet. Purpose in life, that I don't have a problem with :)Quote:

You might also say nowdays we have a purpose in life of trying to make this place better, but thats a little too idealistic for me. I'll just let other people do it :P. But seriously, humans are together for the first time in history, you might say we've got a new purpose in life (what with not trying to annex those pesky neighbours anymore). Well, most of us.

Definition of humanity: the need to make sensical nonsense out what what was originally absolute nonsense anyhow.
I think we have to define our own purpose, I do not believe there is a pre defined purpose for any of us.
