      good and evil

What constitutes "good" and what constitutes "evil" (or negative/positive etc)

and who makes the distinction? god? or mortals?

and if god cannot differenciate between the two, does that mean "evil" is still Godly? Does that mean Hate is actually Love?

      discuss
a child's rhyme stuck in my head
it said life is but a dream
i spent so many years in question
to find i known this all along..

As i see it. Good/evil is subjective and differs higly from person to person. Where i think every singel one makes the distinction. And then togheter with others, a social group or community, one can agree on what that is characteristic for good/evil, in that community.
But in the end really dont think there are nor good or evil, since we know to little about ourself and others. So the good/evil thing comes from missunderstanding of oneself and others. Binded to the differnt aspects of feelings, of the "self".
Like with so many other things we live in a cube, given some color sticks, to draw on the walls with.

Good and evil for me are purely personal things while it would be nice to have absolute good the nearest thing is truth and by knowing the truth you can work out if something’s good or not. The only problem is you have to believe in absolute truth and actually somehow manage to get it

Good and Evil, to me, are human notions. We each have our own notion of what is good and of what is evil. Typically in Western thought, good and evil is a duality; however, typically in Eastern thought, it is not.

In Buddhism there is a metaphor something along the lines of, if you take care of the compost (negative energy) you can grow flowers from it (positive energy).

In much of Chinese thought, there is the Yin-Yang; however it should not be thought of as "good and evil" are thought of in the West. Within Yin is some Yang, and within Yang is some Yin. It is a correlative relationship; not a dualistic one.

Also one should realize that their idea of good or evil is not the same as everyone else's, and that someone else may have a better idea, and so be open to changing their own.

and if god cannot differenciate between the two, does that mean \"evil\" is still Godly? Does that mean Hate is actually Love?[/b]
I don't think that this is correct thinking. Good and evil are human notions. God, nirvana, or whatever you consider the ground of being to be, or whatever name you give to it, must necessarily transcend all notions. This is a different reality, though not separate from "our" reality. In a sense it is a fundamental reality. Here all notions must be transcended; they cannot be applied to God, etc. God is not good; but God is not evil (God is not good; but God is not less than good).

There is no good, there is no evil. Only matter and energy.

..and dark matter and dark energy...maybe, they're still figuring that one out.

Good = something that I/we consider to be ultimately good for us
Evil = something that I/we consider to be ultimately bad for us

That's where our notions start, I think.

I believe, that there is no such thing as good and evil. Merely two differing sides of an argument ultimately. Is killing animals for religious reasons evil? Some might say yes, but in other cultures it may be totally acceptable.

It is all a state of mind to me.

I think there is good an evil. I would agree its a man made idea but since we are humans its still real to us. Its normally pretty easy to tell good from evil, though there are times it might not be as clear.

As I understand it, "good" is the absence of "evil".

See, a long, long time ago, there was only the Yetzer Ra, an entity which only tempted people. Then there came a time when it collided with the malevolent Conscious Mists of Darkness, and together the two entities became "Evil". Evil could now enter the physical multiverse. The Mists' goal had been to destroy, when combined with the Yetzer Ra, the entity Evil's new goal was to tempt and destroy.

Evil can be driven away by pure energy or humanity (i.e. kindness, etc.). The deeper it has embedded itself, the stronger the energy has to be to expel it.

I think evil is when somebody brings unhappiness on somebody else either to get happiness for themselves, or just for no reason. Good is when you give other people, or yourself, happiness at nobody's expense.
