Well, should it?
I think not. If (rightful) corporal punishment were exercised a little more, the Casey Anthony case might not have happened.

Exactly what kind of corporal punishment are you referring to? Prisoners being assaulted? Kids being punished physically violently? Elaborate
Spanking amounts to nothing more than domestic abuse. I think it should be outlawed. There is ZERO justification you have for corporal punishment of children. ZERO.
I don't know about corporal punishment, but corporeal punishment is dubious at best;)
All corporal punishment does is teach children how to hit. It's borderline domestic abuse, and should not be allowed to continue. It's stupid, and there are better ways of instructing your children.
I think some of you are blurring the lines between corporal punishment, domestic abuse, and spanking.
There is a clear distinction between spanking and abuse (in my opinion). Say your child does something wrong, and simply yelling at him/her does not work. Would you spank them? Possibly. I'm not advocating ALWAYS spanking them, but some children don't react well/at all to yelling.
Abuse is another story. If your kid does something wrong and you beat the living day lights out of them, that's wrong.
Of course, maybe the distinction between "abuse" and "spanking" is small for some people, but what are you going to do when your kid laughs in your face when you tell them to stop doing what they're doing? Send them to the "naughty-step"?
I didn't say there weren't, however, I've seen too many soft parents sending their children to the "naughty-step" or telling them to go "stand in the corner". What incentive does the kid have to stop doing his acts? He loses 10 minutes of time staring at a wall, then what?
Also, my parents rarely spanked me, however when they did, I found it far more effective in getting me to stop whatever stupid thing I was doing than being sent to my room for 15 minutes (where I have a TV).
Spanking is a good method when delivered properly.
The common mistake is to deliver spanking due to anger. This is abuse no matter how light the spanking may be. Unless it is out of pure care, and not negative emotion, it is abuse, and not spanking.
The New Strong-Willed Child by James Dobson is an amzing resource that gives excellent guidelines to spanking.
People have become so obsessed with stopping abuse, they want to stop genuine punishment. Punishment is good. Abuse is bad.
When a parent abuses his/her power, he/she also abuses his/her child, no matter how mild the punishment. That is my belief.
If a parent can administer it properly, I think it very effective.
If not, a different method should definitely be used instead.
An angry kid brings a gun to school the next day.
Can someone please explain to a non native English speaker what corporeal punishment is? After googling it and reading your posts, I only ended up confused. :?
No one? Cmon, I know it's physical hurting, but I'm trying to find more concrete meaning on what you're talking about, to be able to understand why this is even a thread!
Physical hurting is a madness, proves only an incapacity of managing things in a clever way.
James Dobson is an idiot.
Corporal punishment includes smacking a kid with a ruler across the wrists, spanking, and other such forms of torture. I agree, it is a shameful and barbaric way to go about something, and there are always better solutions. Adults can still be very scary beings, and for me at least, the thought of a spanking could never stack up to "5 shades of angry."
Fuck I meant to click no...gg.
But it shouldn't be done with weapons (Belt, stick, ladle) just open handed.
There isn't anything wrong with smacking a kid on the ass or even a cuff on the side of the head. You're not really hurting them, it's just to keep them in line when nothing else is working. Eventually they learn to listen to your word or they get smacked. It works for God, it works for us :P
It's not as serious as people think. Again, it depends on how it is administered.
What you people are defining is abuse, not punishment.
There are two extremes.
Any physical infliction of pain is abuse. Maybe husbands should "properly hit" their wives every time dinner's not ready when they come home. After all, it shouldn't matter as long as it's done "properly."
That's a mans man right there.
This is pretty sketchy ground. I voted "no" because I think if used properly, spanking and other light forms of physical punishment can be effective. Unless somebody can prove otherwise with science.
A husband hitting a wife and a parent spanking a child are two different things. Two VERY different things.
Physical punishment can be effective when administered properly.
My mother never spanked me--she licked my ears. Literally. With her tongue. Caused no lasting harm, but it always thoroughly skeeved me out.
They are the same because children are no less of a person! They don't warrant having physical pain inflicted upon them any more than one's wife does, because they are both people with rights! Of prime importance, the inalienable right from cruel and unusual punishment, of which infliction of physical pain falls under.
Yes, I believe you should never strike a child (or switch or anything else like that). In fact, it is illegal in Norway.
