      Heard joke once:

Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says "But, doctor...I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains. Fade to black.
In this excerpt, it seems like Pagliacci's sense of loneliness and feelings about the world and future are the cause of his anxiety. Why do you think he feels all alone? What may have prompted a great clown to decide the world is threatening and the future uncertain? Do you relate to his perspective?

Was that joke original, or was it first used by Rorschach in Watchmen?

In any case, it just sounds like a typical anxiety case. The only thing that
makes his situation different is that he is the entertainment that picks up
other people, and that he can't just entertain himself. As simple.

      I love that quote.

I've heard it worded many different ways. Whether it was re-worded from Rorschach, or Rorschach re-worded it, I don't know. I believe it's an older joke pre-dating Watchmen.

And I completely agree here. I'd be lying if I hadn't felt the same way Pagliacci does in the quote, once in a while.

This is an excerpt from Alan Moore's Watchmen.

I know what you mean when you say he's another "typical anxiety case," but. . . I was hoping to use this excerpt to spark a thread about the reasons Pagliacci or any of us might feel anxious, lonely or threatened, and why feeling this way is a part of humanity. Oh well.
