Question What do Religious Organizations do With Donations?

Lots of religions have a church like building (church, temple, mosque, etc). And just about all of these buildings require, recommend a donation to God. Weather it be food or money. But what do these organizations do with the donations given to them? they can't simply hand it over to God because he cant simply come down here and take it (and because he is fake, but thats besides the point). Maintaining these buildings can't take that much effort or money.

My theory is that they go to a donut shop and spend it on donuts...

From personal experience (growing up catholic and going to Sunday school and all that jazz) my church spent alot of it on charity. Every week we would have a food bank type event where we would organize a truck load of food into baskets and homeless/poor people would come to the church and pick it up. A good chuck goes to general up-keeping of the church like electricity, paying the janitors, etc. There is no way to tell exactly how much money they acquire at the end of every Sunday but like I said my old church spent alot of money on charity events and I cannot speak for other churches.

The church I used to go to had a golden microphone + stand (at least it looked golden. It was probably brass or something) as well as a very large television. Always thought that was funny.

There are as many ways donation money is used as there are churches. Some of the money is spent on the building maintenance (which, IMO, should NOT be too lavish, cause otherwise it brings into question the tax-exempt status). Some is spent on furthering their agenda. And I don't necessarily mean "agenda" in a bad way here.

For example, a friend of mine's church has a program that's just there to do good things for people (e.g. cancer fund raiser, etc.) I volunteered with them before, and it was a great time.

Of course, I don't know if that's in any way representative of what goes on usually, and I don't think they're required to make the books public.

The US tax exemption law is already a joke. There was a documentary recently where a British hypnotist, Derren Brown, trained a guy to be one of those American evangelist performers. I was appalled when I discovered that these preachers, who tell their followers that 'you have to sow a seed of money here and God will return in tenfold' (sowing a seed means simply handing over cash to the people who run the church; they keep it for themselves), are tax exempt. I mean, seriously, what the fuck America; the guy running it had actually spent time in prison for tax evasion. This kind of scam shouldn't even be legal, and you fuckwits are giving extra money to the people running it because it's 'Christian'.

Right, so you have to keep in mind that the people passing these laws are actually in support of Christianity in the first place. If we had atheist lawmakers, we wouldn't be having these kinds of problems. In fact, I think we'd all be better off with atheist lawmakers, since most atheists have the intelligence to go about their business without pushing their fucked up beliefs on everybody else (or lack thereof).

Gods don't hand out checks, so the money to support the church, the priests, and the like have to come from the faithful. In exchange for money the priests provide a service.

Not to be a schmuck, but this just seems like a lame "HAHA BELIEFERS SO DUMB!!! ALL THEIR MONEYS ARE BELOGN TO PRIESTS!" thread.

If you're saying all churches are corrupt, that's nonsense. If you're saying the priest doesn't deserve money because he doesn't provide a service, that's debatable. I don't believe in god any more than you do, but if the thiests find that the priest reassures them, guides them through the rituals of their faith, and providers interpretation of the holy text...I guess he does do something. If nothing else they are donating money so that someone will reassure them of the wonders that await.
