Personally I thought most of these were just idioms anyway, not Bible quotes. What did other people think?

Lmao. Same here. I've heard some pretty questionable things, though, when people were supposedly quoting scripture. So I wouldn't put it past any of these sayings as being often mistaken for Bible references. Lol.

At any rate there's a large deficit of English words in the Bible.

So what's the big deal, a lot of people make mistakes regarding passages in the Bible like just about everyone of you here who want to take one little scripture and twist it all out of whack.

"If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her."

This is metaphorical. Atheists try to twist it into some kind of immoral statement. It's actually about love.

You have to take into account the context in which this law was given.

You're looking into a society that is extremely male oriented in nature; women are seen as helpless and cannot fend for themselves without a husband. If there was a woman that lost her virginity due to rape, it would be impossible for her to marry, because in this society virginity is seen much differently than it is here.
If the rapist was executed, then the raped woman would, sadly, most likely starve as the society she lived in would not allow her to survive. The only humane thing to do (again, in this society) would be to force the rapist to take care of her for the rest of his life.

Could it be stipulated that that this IS the way the hebrew god's law protected women? By our society's standards it sure seems like a crummy way to protect someone, sure, but 1. it does get the job done (an innocent, raped women is taken care of) and 2. the guilty party is punished by forcing the rapist to take care of her for the rest of his life.

      So it IS about love!

You know, if we're resorting to saying "oh well that's just the way that society lived" when encountering certain passages, why not just conclude that they were also a bunch of superstitious folks and put the biblical god to rest?

If you don't like it, don't read it or actually study and fully understand the verses and books before and after that one book instead of just taking one verse from the Bible to mock it.

But it's so easy to mock the claim that marrying your rapist is actually good for your well-being.

What a terrible answer. Is your god really so ineffectual that he has to work AROUND arbitrary human rules? A god of any merit would inform the people their society is completely ridiculous and proceed to fix it. Or better yet, if he has even the slightest hint of omnipotence, lay down some good rules that prevent it from becoming like that in the first place. Yaknow?
