      Music - a spiritual thing

Music plays a big part in my life. I myself am a musician (or at leats I want to be one very much). So I understand music a bit differently than non-musicians or people who has less knowledge about it.

While listening to music I experience something more than just hearing sounds. I feel miuch more. And sometimes it helps me to understand certain things about myself. It makes me do things that I wouldn't normally do. It gives me courage to be myself and seek my goals. Music makes life rich. Sometimes I even experience mild altered states of counciousness while listening to music and I know a man who had a psychedelic (or not psychedelic, but more spiritual) hallucinogenic trip which gave him a powerful insight on himself (he doesn't use any chemicals or external substances. He is categorically against drugs). He was listening to Mozart - Ave Verum Corpus (wonderful piece and the performance is stunning).

So I want to ask Dreamviews members. What is your relationship with music? Am I the only one who feels like this about it?

I'd like to believe most people have an emotional connection to music. Spiritual is too vague a word for me to use though. But there's a reason binaural beats work, music effects the brain's frequency and all an altered state of consciousness is, is a change in frequency.

Granted a good song is typically far more effective than a binaural beat. Something about rhythm and transition plays a huge effect on the value of the sound. Lyrics are also super effective if they're meaningful.

I think a lot of people feel this way about music. It isn't just you. No one just hears noises when they listen to music, with the exception of people with a rare disorder in which they hear mere sounds and don't know what people mean by music.

Personally, I react very strongly emotionally only when I hear particular songs at certain times. There are songs that will send me into a different world if I'm in the right state of mind, but if I'm not feeling the emotion correlated with the song, it will be boring.

I find it interesting that different people like different music. That a song which causes a profound emotional reaction in one person may do nothing for another, or for the same person at a different time.

Yeah. I know that but what I was trying to say is that to musicians the quality of performance matters more than actual song or music piece.

I would say I'm kind of weird when it comes to music. I like music only because I like the singer who sang it. I absolutely cannot stand repetitive music if I can't relate to the singer. I prefer to listen to the sound of rain if I need to clear my mind.

Anyway to add on to the topic, music has been an age old practice brought down from our ancestors. It had been with us before we were so advanced, before we even have musical instruments, we can play music with the most basic tools around us in our house. Music is an entertainment that brings us joy but doesn't rob us off our creativity at the same time. Perhaps music affects us so much because it has been in our genes for so long, carried on from our ancestors.

I'm almost always listening to music. I also think music communicates a state of consciousness. It's a cultural tool in that sense, because it affects moods and thoughts. You can tell a lot about someone by their taste in music because it gives you an idea of what wavelength the person is on, so to speak.

No surprise here but music can have a tremendous effect on me, but as others have said, it is extremely contextual. I also suspect that there may be a bit of arbitrariness to our preferences.

I have lots of thoughts about music but I don't like to talk about it because, words fail.

Music is a way to feel, and pinpoint some complex emotions of mine. It's a very meditative experience all the time; contantly evaulating things such as, "Why do I feel like this with the song playing... what is the essence that it's reaching to? What associations are here?" and it brings me deep into a world of imagery and generative feelings that are totally in sync with the music. It also can relax me by "setting the pace" of my thoughts.

They can also just shoot me out of this world with this kind of process, where associations are just totally out there, and alien, and it triggers a bit of a dissociation for me. It can take me from what feels like a lucid, sober mind, to a deeply psychedelic meditative state, with just a few strides of music.

^the transition after the halfway mark of this song is like my soul being sucked out through a straw. That's the only thing I can condense the experience of hearing it into... lol. It's just crazy for me.

Your right. Music definitely can make you experience altered states of consciousness.

By the way I am a musician too.

In my experience, slow tempo music ( 60bpm-85bpm ) makes me feel the most. Anything higher than 120-130bpm is just bouncy/energetic to me

This one song I listen to is so deep it takes me straight to spiritual exstacy almost everytime..i mean almost to the point to tears of bliss and im kind of new to that. But yea music is really powerful

PLEASE elaborate! I do wish to hear this song.

As far as pace goes, it all depends on what elements the song has going for it. Songs that are right in between slow and steady have a tendency to hypnotize me, although well organized faster paced songs can equally lull me into a dizzying state.

Ambient music, of course, does this very easily for me. Songs like this bring me somewhere that you seem to be describing, Majestic. It's an internal ecstasy that just seems to fill every vein in my body, a vibration that just seems to resonate beautifully with me.

I'm glad you experienced it and know what im talking about Spenner. That sounds exactly what its like.

I think the ecstasy/bliss is simply the relaxation which is our natural state.

I definitely believe music can trigger different states , but i think it's our natural human ability to literally "jump" to these states of consciousness very easily or maybe even stay in that state cause it looks and feels like paradise to me

      Wow.
