I was sitting on my bed watching TV when an sort of funny thought came to me.

In the Bible, when reading most of the prophetic books, It often says that the oracles came in dreams or visions. I've been reading a lot of books on dreaming since becoming interested in the subject and I was reading this one called "The Dream Game" by this lady named Faraday. I was reading about dream diaries and thinking about them when it occurred to me that, when reading some of the prophecies in the Bible we're reading ancient dream journals.

I thought that was kinda funny/cool.

It kinda makes me think more about how ancient cultures viewed dreams and dreaming. I remembered reading somewhere that the Babylonians really thought dreams were important. Any more information or thought about this sort of thing.

(I hope this is the correct place for this, I was worried that if I would put it in another forum and it's religious content would make it get placed here anyway. Sorry if I made trouble for you moderators.)

Yes, many prophetic words were given to men by God through dreams. In the Gospel of Matthew, Pilate is sitting on the judgement seat about to pass judgement on Christ, when his wife sent him a message, which read, "have nothing to do with this innocent man, for i have suffered greatly in a dream because of him." Just one interesting example among many.

hmmm, so Romans believed dreams told omen's and such...a lot of roman culture was borrowed from the Greeks. Did the greeks think in a similar fashion.

I remember hearing stuff about the oracle at delphi, that was a greek thing right? If I remember though that oracle didn't really dream. She would say something and then someone else would translate right?

What is interesting, is that the verse you mentioned was still a message. So even the dreams of gentiles could be influenced by God then? Another thing that is interesting to me is that if dreams were not as important to the people of that time in the same way that they are not as important to most of our society today do you think God would of had to use a different medium? Or would it not have mattered.

There is evidence of tribal societies treating dreams as mediums long before any civilized societies existed. It is likely that dreams have been used and examined for many purposes since the dawn of man.
