I would personally have to say Greek, but the other two are very interesting aswell. I have read pretty much about the Greek and Norse, altough not as much about the Egyptian.

Anubis is pretty cool. Ares would kick his ass, though.

They are all intersting to me, but if I have to choose I'd say Norse. They are so cool with their warriors, battles, honour etc.

Greek mythology is endless.
Greek mythology have great stories, with agony, fight, love, hate, tragedy.
Greek mythology covers almost every topic of human action -there is a story almost about everything.

This is an objective opinion from a Greek

I'd like to comment that, but I won't. I think we should keep the discussion about mythology for as long as we can, you know what I mean... And besides, Greek rocks. It's no more "stupid" than anything else.

Agreed. I'd say something about stupid beliefs today, but we'll try to keep this on-topic, eh?

Anyway, Norse is my favorite by far, with Greek in second and Egyptian a far distant third.
I especially like Yggdrasil, The World Ash, and the Dragon Nidhogg along with the Eagle Vidofnir. The Well of Urd and all that...
It's just interesting! And Nifflheim, Alfheim, Asgard...
I love it.

I like the Greek Myths best becuase they are so funny and yet wise. The Gods are so human in thier mindset and I relate well to them.

I love the Greek mythology...

(By the way: The Greek Gods weren't always that human. The Gods were just Gods once: They were just personifications of certain aspects of life (love, beauty, death, etc.). But there was a Greek poet once (either Hesiodos (Hesiod) or Homeros (Homer) (I forgot)) who made the Gods more human in nature and mind.)

Not that I've read very much at all, but Norse.

They used Narfi's innards to bind Loki to three slabs of stone, and Skaði placed a snake over his head so that its venom would pour onto him. Sigyn sits beside him and collects the venom in a wooden bowl, but she has to empty the bowl when it fills up, during which time the searing venom drips onto the Trickster's face. The pain is then so terrible that he writhes, making the earth shake.[/b]
Fuck. Yeah!

Anyone know a good starting point for norse myth?

There can be myths about historical figures, but historical figures aren't myths in and of themselves.

In order to keep the debate under control, we may want to stick with the options listed. If you wish to include others, there is nothing stopping you from creating your own, more inclusive thread.

Norse. I was going to go with DC, but it wasn't an option. So I guess Marvel is a close second.

Definitely Egyptian! I have always been fascinated in their culture and belief system. They were great architects and geniuses in terms of their burial methods.

Well the only historical evidence for jesus is the bible. So without any historical evidence to back up jesus then to me he is a myth like believing in heracules doesn't make hercules not a myth. Also tales of Adam and Eve and Noah seem like fables, which make a bigger myth.

What are you saying chinese mythology is inferior. Man I don't descrimate that's like discussing art and saying we can only discuss the white people's art. It's not my fault that the person in charge of this topic only knows three mythologies.

That's a valid point, which is why it may be a good idea to start a new thread. It was my impression that this discussion was intended to discuss these types of mythology in particular. Otherwise, I'm sure the author of the thread would have made an option for 'other.'

Jesus is as much a Myth as Odissay or Hercules.

Not really. Jesus has been established, through sources outside of the Bible, to have been a historical figure.

The Odyssey is a myth that is based off of the Trojan War, which is a historical event.

Hercules, and his 13 wonderous tasks, have, to my knowledge, no basis in fact whatsoever.

Norse mythology is pretty cool, but Greek mythology is even cooler and there's more of it. The Iliad beats everything, and Heracles is cool. Have a look at Alan Gibbons' trilogy about the Gamemaster. Starts with "Shadow of the Minotaur", and the last book is "Warriors of the Raven". The first is set in Greek mythology , the last in Norse mythology. Both are interesting, but the Greek one deals with a much more consistent, understood world, where the Norse myths are to some extent lost or incomplete.

It's a shame that we lost so much of the barbaric myths.
What does the middle book in the trilogy deal with?

I agree. I've done countless school projects and essays on ancient Egypt. I even mummified a rabbit for my senior exit project! hehe, yeah a little morbid but it was cool.

I'm not sure why I'm so drawn to ancient Egyptian mythology, but it just fascinates me. The Greek and Norse are cool too, but Egyptian is by far my favorite.
