The Most Important Question about Earth

After so many years of religious debates, I have grown tired of them. Most of them are meaningless and rarely end with any agreement, which makes them stupid. Its because we make them too complicated.

So I'll make an attempt at one big, general question. Why are there SO MANY religious faiths on earth? Why? Why are there so many unrelated beliefs of invisible creators who make things happen on earth. These beliefs are on every corner of the globe, and come in all shapes and forms. They all have their books/proof, and all claim to be true.

To me, it just seems like a natural human response to having an imagination stronger than common sense. I mean, why else would there be so many religions?

I believe that atheist have in part spawned because of this.
It is another seemingly fact that humans need answers to things we cannot answer. Most of us need this comfort of knowing what we cannot know. Some view this as another piece of the puzzle that makes religion a fallacy.

But why? Why do people defend it, often to the death?

Because of their conviction in their beliefs.

I think you just said it Half/Dreaming. Death
Most everyone is afraid of death. None of us know what truly happens after death. That is unless you adhere to a belief system that tells you otherwise.

The need to stand behind something is a strong and innate property of the human psyche. When a lot of people do it, it is easily defined within a person, acceptable where it would otherwise be irrational.

That is a strong possibility. A brain built to deal only with life being confronted with death should have strange results, especially with an animal that can recognize what death is.

Probably because there is indeed truth in all of them buried way down deep. Truth in the similarities, but not in the differences.

There is a certain truth in all and from that truth religion is born, a half truth at best, veering off on a tangent from the founding teachings that really have nothing to do with the "religion" so to speak.

The more time that passes the more distant the religion gets from the truth, till one day no one knows the truth at all, all they know is the empty shell of religion.
They all just holler we are the way , we have the truth, one and all, but none have the foggiest idea of what that truth is in reality. They have becme blind to it, forgotten it in favor of ritual and ceremony which means little to nothing really when it all comes down to it.

Some find a tid bit of the base truth and leave one religion and start another, but still really dont know what it is they are talking about anymore than the previous.

This is my view of it anyhow. There is likely more to it too.

Dont ask me to comment about what this Truth is , all I am doing is answering your question in my own words as to how there are so many religions.

Another possibility is that they all come from the same belief and have branched out in different directions. They may all seem mostly unrelated, but recorded human history does not even come close to the beginning of human history. In much the same way that species evolve along divergent paths until they seem very different from each other, its possible that all religions are based off of the ideas of some of the very earliest human beings.

If you look at a lot of religions, you can compare many of the Gods and the religions stories to each other and find startling similarities that lead me to believe that there was once one primary religion, but at some point people began to split and diverge from it and hence why we have so many different religions now.

back when technology was less advanced, ppl still needed answers and developed religion. why are there so many different kinds? cultural isolation, plain and simple.

      ^or that^

why do ppl stick with it after all these centuries? there are some things that even science can't fix: it feels better to think that ur son died for a higher purpose and is now in heaven, than to think he got hit by a drunk driver for no reason.
