Bible Code?

I saw this show on the Discovery Channel about a supposed code in the Bible or more specifically the Torah when you take the original Hebrew version Anyways using ELS (Equidistant Lettering System), where you put the text on a grid and the start on any letter and then count "X" number of letters and repeat the pattern you can spell words, phrases and sometimes entire sentences all relating to events in history in small matrices (or grids, and the closer together the more improbable. It mentions everything from Kennedy's assassination to RFK's assassination to 9/11 to the lunar landings, Columbia space shuttle disaster, Kobe earthquake, Israeli PM Rabin's assassination (predicted using the code before it happened) and tons of other stuff sometimes including the year or even the date that the event happened.

Supposedly encoded by God, it's amazing, the chance of this happening once is low but it occurs again and again and again mentioning tons of key phrases i.e. for Kennedy's assassination it said something like: Kennedy, President, Dallas, 1963, murdered or something like that. For 9/11 it said Airplanes, attack, twin, towers, twice and in a separate matrix it said "Destruction I will call you; cursed is Bin Laden and vengeance from the Moshiach." in one ELS.

Also, some people have made some predictions about the future using the Bible Code such as a large earthquake will hit LA in 2010, that a Palestinian state will be formed in 2010, and that a comet will strike earth in 2012 and desroy it (the same year the Mayans said!) but there was another matrix saying the comet to strike earth in 2012 will be destroyed before it hits earth implying we still have the choice and it's up to us. Perhaps most interesting of all one matrix says the WMD's of Iraq might have been sent to Lebanon before the war. If any of these turn true (hopefully not the comet one) I'll be a believer but I'm not 100% convinced yet.

Skeptics used Moby Dick (a book of similar length) to find predictive ELSs saying these things will occur in a book this size no matter what and it's not divine intervention but they only found a few good ELS in Moby Dick like the assassination of MLK and Kennedy and haven't found anything before it happened like the assassination of Rabin. Also one person found massive amounts of data about his personal family history and family tree mentioning the names of many of his ancestors and how they were realted to each other in a relatively small matrix.

Well if you take the Hebrew bible and try to find a code then to be accurate you have to use it in its hebrew version for accuracy sake not in its english version. But personally I don't beleive it but i'd love to see the discovery show.

And btw I hope George bush didn't watch that discovery show...Knowing him he just might invade Lebanon to find those WMD's

They did use it in Hebrew. Hebrew text using whatever they were searching for and translated into Hebrew to search for it. Even using the Hebrew calendar for the date and years etc. Also Sir Isaac Newton was obsessed about the Bible Code and learned Hebrew and everything. It only works in the Torah because those five books of the Bible were supposedly written by God himself and transcribed word for word by Moses.

tl;dr

I've seen this before. How they would turn the Torah into a crossword puzzle.

One one page they found stuff like, "Kennedy," ,"He shall be killed," and, "In cars."

With a book of thousands of pages, thousands of words, etc. You're bound to find patterns. Whenever I get an ordinary crossword puzzle, I can always find tons of words that shouldn't be in there, "Shit, Fuck, Pussy, etc."

This is also just using a basic letter by letter system. With ELS, the possabilities are endless, and I could show that the little kid from Mad Magazine predicted 9/11 and Osama.

While it is very coincidental and may seem prophetical, I think that the odds probably aren't very near impossible. I also bet that you could find tons of very nonsensical connections in there, but we find the occasional pattern that matches what we want to see.

It is, however, an interesting show that had my head shaking many times at the idiocy, and gleaming at the outstanding coincidences. Does it prove anything other than that the human mind seeks for patterns to discover the inner workings of reality? Not really.

I saw this a couple years ago, I believe. I remember that it came on in the same week or day even as the Edgar Cacie and Nostradamus shows on the History channel also.

Yes, I'm a History/Discovery/Science Channel freak.

Why did God choose to communicate with us in such a cryptic way? Why can't he ever just come out and say what he means? Why didn't he ever say anything useful? Why has it been so long since we'ver heard from him? Why did he only talk to a few tribes in the middle east a few thousand years ago?

Well actually the one you mentioned stephent91 was from Moby Dick but like I said the length of the ELS as well as the number and close proximity in which they occur can not be rivaled by Moby Dick and the fact that this occurs over and over again is nigh statisitically impossible.Yes you would expect ELS but for Kennedy you might get Kennedy on one page and then assassination on the other or something but in the Torah they're right next to each other. And like I said sometimes even the date is mentioned. Like I said they even predicted Yitzakh Rabin's assassination before it happened. I think this clearly has more merit than Moby Dick. I'm not saying I believe but it's very strange.

Other things it predicted:
Columbine: Trenchcoat Mafia, eric, Dylan, April
Shakespeare: Shakespeare presented on stage, Hamlet, Macbeth
Washington sniper shootings: John Lee, on the left hand, with the right finger (how someone would fire a rifle)
Lee Harvey Oswald's assassination: Oswald, Ruby, killer shall be killed
WWII: Hitler, evil man, slaughter, oven, he will not win
Iraq War: Saddam, he is captured, he is humiliated
RFK assassination: S. Sirhan, Second leader shall be killed (implying he would've become president), 1968
Columbia disaster: consumed in fire, spaceship, fire in the sky etc.
These are just the ones I remember and there were even more ELS for each of these but I don't remember, anyways if you saw the show you would've been blown away. It makes sense that this would only occur in the Torah because they were transcribed word for word by Moses from God as opposed to Prophets having visions and having God tell them things and then they write it down how they remember.

Guys guess what?

Last night, I was coding and I noticed that when I turned my head sideways to the screen and inverted the lines in the IDE, parts of the segments spelt out the end of the world in 2012!!!

Nevermind the sensless garbage between each letter, it has to be the Flying Spaghetti Monster talking to me!
