      Quakers/Religious Humanists

Any out there? Quakerism Seems to suit me the best with religions. I feel that to truly live life one must find out things for themselves. The only thing with Quakerism I'm not good with is plainness. I don't exactly dress conservatively.

Anyway, are there any Quakers on DV?

      Religious Humanists?

Can you sum up (in your own words, no link to wikipedia or something) what a quaker is? I'm not familiar with that, although one of my best friends identifies as one.

I think this is equivalent to looking for Amish friends on the internet.

Theres a difference between being Quaker and being Amish. Though a lot of people that are Amish are also Quakers because it fits well with their lifestyle.

Quakerism focuses more on your personal journey with God. It's you and God, not hearing about God from a pastor. Their services are different too, they don't (always) have huge services in a big building, a lot of services are either in someones house or just outside in a circle.

Its hard to put a definite definition on Quakerism though, because it can differ person to person.

Eh, from what I heard not so much. I don't really believe that much of the Bible though. Theres a lot of things I have a hard time with.

Not to mention, I go to a southern baptist church (not my choice). Hopefully when I get my car soon that will change though.

I'm having a tough time understanding why Quakerism is considered a part of Christianity, then. Seems like they are watered down Christians - more spiritual, more independent, less herded like cattle sort of thing.

In what sense is that watered down? Functional, positive religion isn't 'the real thing?'
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I didn't mean "watered down" in a negative way. Quite the opposite, really. You should know that about me by now!

I've met a few Quakers, and they seemed very nice. I don't know if they have anything in common at all with Amish, except that their numbers are few, and most people don't know much about them.

James Dean was a Quaker, and so is Bonnie Raitt.

Both sought asylum in Pennsylvania, "The Quaker State." William Penn was a Quaker and opened his colony to religious refugees. The Amish, a.k.a. Pennsylvania Dutch, were refugees in Holland at the time, having fled Lutheran Germany. The Quakers were an oddball(i.e. not Anglican) minority in Britain. My great-great-grandparents were an Amish man and native woman, but no Quakers that I know of. Can't say I've met any, either, despite growing up in the Quaker State.

I know it was a backhanded compliment, I just can't let it pass without outing the subtext that the more hypocritical, manipulative forms of a religion are the purest or most characteristic. You should know that about me by now

It comes from a conviction that reforming religion is a more rational goal than refuting it, which means holding up tolerant, inclusive, humanist movements as examples of 'real' religion, not dismissing them as flukes. The only future I see for Anti-Religion is to be another squabbling denomination convinced that it's right.

Sometime I want to check out a Quaker meeting. The whole "speak when the spirit moves you" thing has some appeal for me.

At the moment I go to an Episcopalian church.

if you look at the history of Christianity, quakers are the closest to early Christians

early Christians did not assemble in big buildings. they gathered where ever, they were spiritual, they celebrated, they honored loving each other and their relationship with God

there was not a strong focus on church hierarchy and performing rituals by the book until some time later
