      Richard Dawkins... Yippy. :D

My Mom and I were watching TV last night. I was writing an English paper, so I wasn't paying attention until I heard, "The God Delusion." I jumped up and said, "Dawkins?"

This is what we were watching.

After it, though, my Mom says, "I'm pretty sure I have that book somewhere." So I'm going to read The God Delusion after I finish The Bourne Identity.

If you read the God delusion make sure you read the devils delusion by david berlinski.

I would, but just the fact that it creates a representation of Atheism as "The Devil" makes me not want to read it.

From what I've read about it, it looks like an annoying fundamentalist book that was written by a scientist.

Thats good. Didn't your mom ever teach you never to judge a book by it's cover?

But anyways it's just a suggestion. The author is renown for his great work in science and takes a perrty light hearted jab at atheism. it's a good read, don't limit yourself.

He's just a person. Albeit, a smart one, but I don't hold him in any higher esteem than any other person. Well maybe a little because I like his work.

The Pope, Jesus, God, religious people cream their vag's when they hear these names.

not all religions or spiritual recognize Jesus as anyone special

God doesn't count, im talking about a human being here that we know exists. and again, the understanding of God is different from religion to religion to spirituality to spirituality. to many, saying God means the self, not some man in the sky

the Pope hardly makes any impression on spiritual people *no impression* and only makes a real impression, on less than half of all catholics, if not, less than 1/3 of catholics

      no

there is no single name that is honored across the board

for one, spirituality is about individuality. we will not ever honor some one as much as atheists honor dawkins

That's really general, and I would like to see some statistics that show that "Atheists worship dawkins".

      hmmm

      well

I dont know who you are quoting, because I didn't say that

this is my observation based on the reactions of atheists online, they all seem to get really excited when the name dawkins is brought up.

Hey dude, that's precisely the type of video that would be good in that thread about why I'm an atheist as opposed to agnostic.. THING...

I have that book. Signed by Dawkins. Teehee. Anyway, I've read the first one or two chapters, and frankly I've seen to many of his videos to find any of the material new. We'll see how the rest of it goes though.

Btw, I don't see a problem with being a fan (or fan-girl ) of a scientist. No Dawkins fan will ever claim that he's the son of god.

I think atheists rally around Dawkins because such a widely known and popular atheist (that is, widely known and popular particularly FOR their atheism) has never really been known. He is helping to get atheism into the mainstream as something more accepted and understood, which makes a lot of people respect him greatly.

I'll look more in depth into it.

I revere him as an influential person, but nothing more. He is one of the central figures in Atheism, so of course he is going to be a widely known and appraised person. Aside from Mes, nobody really thinks of him as you put it. I like his works, just as I like Brian Eno's works.

Should I be condemned because I like The Beatles or Zappa with the more enthusiasm than somebody who likes rap, while I view rap as a horrid excuse for art? The thing is, I am not as fanatic about Dawkins as Theists are about various prophets and preachers. He is, however, an influential, intelligent person.

Interesting.... since he states that he does not believe 100% that God does not exist. And about how it is unscientific to say that you are 100% about anything.

I know a lot of people, including him call themselves Atheist, but I would consider him Agnostic because he realizes there is a possibility. I also doubt that God exists (I mean any current organized religion), but I don't call myself an Atheist. Though I also don't think that it's possible to be as almost sure as he is, since in a scientific perspective there is nothing to test for to prove Gods existence anyway.

Interesting that so many Atheists believe there is a possibility, yet still call themselves Atheist. I know they are usually like 99.999999% sure or whatever, but being that sure doesn't seem scientific it me, since there is no way to test it. I guess it's easier to say Atheist though because there are many different levels of Agnosticism, from being almost certain God exists, to not being able to know either way, to being almost certain God does not exist. I am in the middle though, I don't think there it is possible to know either way, but I can see how it is easier to just say Atheist if you are almost certain God does not exist.
