Just a quick question on Christianity

Ok well often when i use a quotation from the OT or talk about the OT as violent or homophobic etc. Christians at my school and on this forum will say " Oh well the OT doesn't apply."

So basically i know being Christian means believing Christ is your Lord and Saviour. So God and Christ are the same, Christ isn't really Gods son, they are the same being, unless of course there are two Gods, Yahweh and Christ, but i doubt that's what is meant. My question is does that mean Christians do not believe in the God of the OT? They say the OT doesn't apply and so i assume the teachings of the OT God are not the basis of Christianity, the NT is what Christianity believes in. However this means that the creation story, Adam and Eve, ten commandments and other very important events don;t apply to Christians, yet they do often believe in the creation story regardless of the in fact it is in the OT which they don't believe in, basically this confuses me, is it sections of the OT that Christianity don't believe in? If so how do they pick which parts not to follow? Or is it just saying the OT doesn't apply lets some Christians dodge the very negative things in some parts of the Bible?

      A thread I made...

It doesn't answer your question completely, though.

The OT is included because Jesus was supposedly Jewish, so to use Jesus as a new religion, his beliefs of Judaism must be included. Also, branching off of a major religion such as Judaism is much easier to gain supporters than starting a new religion.

As for picking and choosing, they are just trying to get around the horrid sides of the Bible. Many will claim that the entire Bible is true, but when you give them examples of slavery and murder they will say something like, "Well, that's just how it was in those times. It doesn't apply now."

For me, that statement only supports the statement that the Bible was written by fallible, even deranged, humans instead of being God's word.

They pick and choose (based on the secular values of society). Religion = hypocrisy.

Christians tend to follow the New Testament, that is their main focus. Although they do use the Old testament for insight.

So if we try to secularise we are hypocrites, and if we don't were barbaric. Does catch 22 mean anything to you, in your religion defunct perception of the world?

I have answered this question at least three or four times and I suppose after this I will answer it several mor times. We christians still believe in the OT, we look at it as a historical Record of the things that where expected of humanity before the arrival of the messiah and the new promise with humans and God made through Jesus. Jesus's main message was that it is through faith, not the law, that man is saved. He and his followers declared that things such as not shaving and certian other customs, such as dietary customs, are unnecesary and that all that is neccecary is faith. We believe in the OT we just believe that most of it's laws do not aply to us. Before the arrival of Jesus God had a promise with humanity that said that all they must do is obey the law he had written down for them and follow a certian moral code. Through Jesus's death we have a new contract with God, that all we need is faith, and not pointless technicality, to be one with God. So, as you can plainly see, we still believe in the OT it is just that htrough Jesus we saw that those customs were not required.

Even though Jesus said himself that his coming does not nullify the OT laws?
