Why unquestionable faith is an evil, evil thing

      http://www.master3ddesign.com/Gettin...tory%20Out.htm

For those who are too lazy to read:

Dan Silverman was a preacher and missionary for 15 years while married to his wife and having 4 children. He gained some sense (or lost his faith to the religious) and stepped down as assistant pastor from his church and told his wife he lost his faith. After his wife telling him to stay away from the children and praying for either his reconversion or death and his pastor being an asshole to him, around a week later he was arrested for molesting a child. He's currently going through court to fight the charges.

His story is shocking and infuriating; in my days as a fundie teenager I knew people who were exactly like this guy's wife and pastor, where not believing in god (or even having doubts) was worse than murder. These are sick, sick people.

On a side note, he makes another good point about our legal system in that cases involving abusing children you are assumed guilty until proven innocent, especially if the accusation comes from the mother.

Damn, that was a nice read. Shocking story.

As an atheist that has never been on the inside of religion, I can't say much about it, other than I agree with him fully.

And that mother sure is nice.

      I feel sort of speechless.

Still not as bad as trying to leave Scientology. But yeah, that is pretty terrible.

I have met more atheists in this forum than I have in my entire life outside of this forum, and I have learned a lot. Something I have noticed is that a lot of the people who argue the most vigourously against the existence of God are people who used to be very religious. I am one of them. Christian fanaticism is creating atheists left and right.

As for the story you posted, it represents something very real. Atheists are absolutely despised by a whole lot of Christian fundamentalists. Being an atheist will make you more hated by them than being gay, communist, Muslim, or even a serial killer. It is extremely bizarre. I think it has to do with the fact that our lack of belief causes them to face their own doubts, and nothing is more threatening to them than that. Plus, our influence causes the fundamentalist leaders to lose power.

An atheist triggers the same emotional response for a religious person as a mother taking away a child's security blanket.

I think it serves that satan worshipping preacher right. He was obviously infected by the devil's parasite and would have spread his disease to all he touched if something wasn't done about it.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

This is a pretty old thread, which is probably why the link is broken, here is a link to a different site that has the same story.

      http://atheists-and-christians.blogs...silverman.html

Next time if you see this kind of stuff just google the name of the person the article is about it is a lot faster than waiting for someone else to do it.

Oh thanks! That's weird, I didn't realise the thread was so old... It appeared in some list at the bottom of the page, didn't mean to resurrect it.

I became athiest after being v religious, I've fergotton why, but it has something to do with that the world was not created in six days. But people should never be bullied, into religion or into pure embarassment.

I think that God shows a person the right faith or religion for them, and no one religion shows the Truth. Rather, all of them do. People should not be forced to believing a particular thing for this very reason. After all, if God loves us so much, why would He only let us love Him in a particular way? But Athiesm isn't wrong, it is another belief.

Athism isn't wrong. Those Church people should get that into their heads.

Beliefs are never wrong. Acting on a belief that harms others is. That's why I've never had a problem with the religious as long as they don't verbally abuse others with their threats of hell.

Or make false accusations about rape as the accused is atheist.

Start a new thread next time, ok

"There's nothing better than knowing what it's like to fly like superman. Being fully aware of the air whipping by you, controlling every movement of every single atom in your body with a single thought. It's real freedom, and there's not a word good enough to describe it, so I'll just call it dreamy for now."
