      Athiesm a sin?

I been an athiest for awhile now. 7 years as a matter of fact. My family doesnt appreciate what I am and that Im going to hell. They said I should be ashamed of myself. That I shouldnt be passing that down to my children because it will "Poison" them. I love being an Athiest. It has giving me a clear mind and I been less stressed out. I believe that religion is a way for a "higher being" to control what the world does and how they work. I don't like the concept because I believe the stories of Christiansm and Buddhism. I just believe its bullshit and not truth...

But why do people think Athiesm is a sin?

Because if you don't accept Jesus as your saviour (which you can only do if you are a Christian), you are left with the original sin and probably a bunch of other sins all leading to the place of God's true love - Hell. That's one interpretation.

There are a bunch of Christians who don't believe in hell or don't believe that what you believe will get you to hell etc. So you're unlucky that your fammily believes otherwise.

Also I think Buddhism should really to be paired with Christianity, Islam, whatever... it's on, or can be on a completely different level, philosophically, than your standard every day religions.

I think it was fairly natural when religious institutions were hugely powerful (many still are of course) to demonise the lack of any faith.

Organized religion is almost entirely politics with some spirituality thrown in as almost an afterthought. What it basically amounts to is, "I don't like you not believing in my folklore, and I've been told that not believing in my folklore is bad, so I wish bad things to happen to you."

Because people do not always think.
That's a good one. I'll have to remember it.

Right! I think it's important to remember how it all started.

Yep. Atheism is not a "sin" because "sins" don't exist. Same way that you are not part unicorn. Unicorns don't exist.

Props to you for standing up to your family. I really can't comprehend how parents could honestly think their own daughter was going to hell...

Seriously. The least the bastard could have done is make it taste like mangoes or something. That's the argument against an all-loving god right there. Why did he make his ass taste like ignorance and then expect me to kiss it.

I had a vague idea one time when the book I was reading mentioned the commandments. It only says to have "no other gods"; by that wording atheists are fine.

Tell your parents to get knotted because if they were so concerned about you going to hell then they wouldn't have had you in the first place.

I really hope you're not offended, but they really sound like selfish fucks.

That is such a good point. I never looked at it that way before. If I believed Hell is real and that most people go there, I would not have any kids. I would not want to create an additional soul if it had a likelihood of burning forever. It's just best not to create souls if that is what often happens.

If you believe in some scriptures that are regarded as holy since some drunken people from millenias past wrote them, labelling them as word of some god by the way, then yes : it is a sin and you are a heavy sinner.

However, since sin is a concept that doesn't exist in the real world, I personally think you are a rational person who likes to live her life as she wants. Isn't that the greatest virtue ever?

Ah Bonsay, Think you've used the wrong term my man. You said a bunch of Christians, you mean.

A bunch of " We can't face the fact our God is supposed to be all loving but teaches discrimination and violence towards many and sends the majority of humans to suffer forever in hell, so we ignore the existence of Hell and pretend all the bad things don't happen. We're not really Christians, we're people on the long road toward Atheism because we realise the God our faith speaks of is a monster but we don't want to let go of the crutch that is faith."

I tend to see atheism as a sort of denial of the possibility of something larger than themselves..I am a firm believer that one must remain open to any possibility...words like coincidence and luck are sort of like short cuts to thinking..and that these events ARE connected to an individual...I wonder, do atheists take their nighttime dreams seriously? Do atheists entertain the possibility of premonition and other so called psychic phenomenon?

Sin is such a funny concept I find...it is like religion REQUIRES sin as a part of their religious reality....it seems that one must choose between sin or salvation...does this mean that if there is no sin there is also no salvation? Sort of like if there is no ignorance there is no enlightenment?

I am a Christian and I wouldn't dislike someone because they are athiest. My best friend is an athiest. You believe what you want to believe. Sense you are athiest, why worry about if it is a sin or not because in your belief there is no sin. I would suggest sitting down with your parents and speaking to them about this in a calm manner and try not to get fired up. Good luck with your situation.

Tell them that surely they will go to hell for their failure to raise you into healthy christendom.

That's not always the best solution, my best friends parents aren't paying for his college now that he's come out as an atheist (however, he was hella smart to begin with and amassed enough money in scholarships to make it on his own).

Why is it a parents responsibility to pay for college?

I paid my own way through college. One thing that i saw going through college was those that paid for themselves did much better then those who had mom and dad fund it.

Is it normal in America that parents pay the fees for a college? I have paid all of my studies myself and so have most of my friends.
