      My visit to the doctor

Just got back from the Doc. I go to a Christian Medical place because it was recommended to me so I wouldn't get referred to a shrink when I needed pills. So anyway, I pick up a book he has in there while I am waiting, he comes in and tells me that I can borrow it if I want. I told him after the 2 pages it wasn't somet...hing I think I would be interested in reading. So he asks me why I wasn't interested in the book. Hence I get into a religious debate with a doctor (which is much more difficult then debating people without doctorates). So now he wants me to think of 3 things, where did we all come from, what went wrong, and how do we make it right, in respect to my worldview. I figured I'd post the questions here to get other peop...le's answers/perspectives before I formulated my own.

Where did we come from? Don't know. But I believe in Evolution 100% as the origin of our species. What went wrong? I don't think anything went wrong, I think the world is progressively getting better and better although slowly. How do we make it right? Continue to use diplomacy over war, accept that people are all different, and try to find a way past those differences until we eventually have a Utopian society. (not betting that's happening anytime soon)

This is a cut and paste from my facebook wall, then I realized I would probably get more input from here. Anyway. All thoughts are welcome.

I'm curious as to what he meant by "what went wrong". Was it related to the book?

Well, it's pretty obvious the book preaches christian doctrine... "what went wrong" refers to original sin I suppose. Wow, pushy doctor!! I'd just tell him I:m an atheist and don't care to discuss it with him. Or do you need to (pretend to) be christian to go to that hospital?

I thought that was the initial premise. But apparently you don't have to be religious to be a patient. He knows now that I am not only an atheist but also gay. The kicker is i went to the shrinks above his building (christian shrinks) for about 3 years when my parents found out I was gay.

He's really not a pushy doctor, he is very much open to questions and such. One of the biggest things that he came up with was the evolution between male and female origins. I have a terrible memory, and I know that I have heard this argument many times, but I could not remember the rebuttal. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

I have learned that a very quick way to respond to somebody who asks questions like that is to use three words, or else just hold up a picture.

Just for kicks, if he starts talking about God after that, say, "Oh, well I call God the Flying Spaghetti Monster."

      To answer your questions
Where do we come from? I believe we come from the planet Earth somewhere in Africa and slowly migrated around the world thanks partly to continental drift (Pangaea theory).

What went wrong: In my opinion, greed went wrong. Greed led to many different wars and disagreements and all sorts of problems.

How do we make it right? I’d have to think about that for a long time. I have my ideas but when I play them through completely, it all comes down to there’s nothing that can be done because someone will ruin it for everyone.

Another question related to the last, How can we make it better? Start caring about people as people instead of only worrying about how much money they are worth.

Answers your doctor is looking for
      A) we come from God
      B) Eve ruined it for everyone when she fell for Satan’s temptation
      C) We make it better by living our lives for God and loving everyone as one of God’s children.

Answers to freak your doctor out (at the very least he'll stop asking these questions...of course he might also have you hauled away by the men in white... )
      A) I think we originally come from the planet Nytron. Our ancestors started out as an exploration party. We were sent out to explore and settle on Earth. Earth was a very different climate than Nytron, so over time, we evolved to match our surroundings and spread out to different parts of the globe. Eventually we reached how we look today.
      B) We should never have left the paradise of Nytron, but some day, our brethren will come back for us and rescue us from this place.
      C) To truly make it right, we should build a communication device so that we may contact Nytron. They will offer us the wisdom to create a true Utopia!

I have several friends who are very religious. I have my own views which differ greatly from theirs (and they are likely to argue/discuss to try to prove me wrong) so I offer some weird almost funny explanation and suddenly they drop religion from a topic they talk to me about.

Ok, the whole reason I go to this guy is cause he gives me shrink meds without sending me to an expensive shrink. I think those answers would be counter productive to that lol.

Then yeah, you might want to stick to more "traditional" answers. Some doctors can be so closed minded *sigh*

      What went wrong?

      Free will ?

      How can we correct it?

      It will come full circle.

      Where did we come from?

We came from the Earth itself by means of evolution.

What went wrong? In my personal opinion, collectivism happened.

No, those three questions are used throughout most Christian faiths.

From a religious+factual standpoint (such as the doctor's I presume), my answer would be: Nothing went wrong. "Sin" is something within every species on the planet. Religious rules like "don't kill" can either be argued that every species or no species follow it. Generally, animals do not kill those within their own pack, and humans don't kill within their community, so neither commit murder. Whereas, animals DO kill other animals outside their pack to survive, and humans kill other humans outside their community in war. Neither are seen as murder, and that's because the rule to not kill is a self preservation method. If you have no intention of killing Fred, Fred probably will develop no intention to kill you. But if you do not know someone and have even a slight reason to be against them, killing them is acceptable. There is a video about this that has been posted somewhere in R/S before, if anyone can find the link.
Now, if we are to admit that killing in war is proof something went wrong, then we are to say something in every species went wrong. Now, what kind of god is unable to even make one correct species?

Would it be considered evolution if we reverted to microbes?

      Where did we come from?
We always existed, we always will exist.
      What went wrong?
Forgot who we were and that we are all one
How do we make it better?
Remember that we are all one.

It's all subjective. If we evolved into microbes or flowers and never hurt each other or the environment, it would be what some people consider advancement.
