Calea has a much more known background and it's the more popular of the two. I've heard very good reports as well as disappointing ones with Calea though, so the amount you take seems to make a big difference on its effects. Speaking of it's effects this website rounds it up pretty well. It's much more immediate in effect, which includes the immediacy of time before it's effects wear off; so it appears to not have a permanent effect. I haven't used it, but it seems preferable if you'd like to only have vivid dreams on days that you choose. It is said by many to be the most bitter thing they have ever tasted though, lolol they can't seem to stress that enough.

Because Silene Capensis isn't as well known however, the reports are mostly heard from various sources of people having tried the plant. The only big negative side effect I've heard it has is a purgative effect, but only because the users used a much bigger dose then they should have. Personally when I took too large a dose, I felt slight headaches very similar to having drank too much coffee, this went away when I began taking regular doses. Also with doses larger than recommended, you may feel more energized (also like too much coffee, although I know it doesn't have caffeine in it, it has a similar feel) and if taken at night you may have trouble sleeping. And lastly as said by many, after 3 months of taking it, it will leave a permanent increase on dream vividness and recall.

Also I've heard combining the two seems to negate each other's effects, so I wouldn't recommend it, they seem to not get along. If you really wanna do more research or read about people's personal experiences I recommend checking out Erowid (though there's only very little recorded for xhosa root, i had to do research on google and read about it in different forums discussing it).

I'm really looking for that permanent effect. Hmm. I might try that Xhosa at some point.
