i'm okay with my shadow. it teaches me things, and it doesn't scare me- instead it feels like it helps... are these things safe?

Never experienced this. I believe it's just a manifestation of the childhood fears of the dark. Not sure why it happens especially during SP.
Maybe it's some kind of your body reaction. The body is uncontrollable during SP, thus vulnerable so maybe it's some kind of fear of the predator hunting during the night inherited from our ancestors.
If you feel like it, please take a look at my YouTube channel:

This concept reminded me of a video by Vsauce which might hopefully give some insight on this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEikGKDVsCc

The idea says that if we see a person pointing a gun at us, we get scared but there are plenty of other things which scare us that aren't actually a threat. For instance many people are afraid of masks, like the ones clowns might wear. The reason why we're so afraid of this, even if the mask is a happy one is because it creates ambiguity, vagueness. It has removed our ability to tell if the person is really happy or sad, or maybe angry. We just don't know and that removal generates anxiety which we call 'the creeps'. We're not sure if it's a threat and therefore act as if it was, just in case. Something our ancestors found very useful.

The way I believe this relates to the concept of a shadow is that it is of the human form, with no distinguishing characteristics. It is blank and void. It represents a force, good or bad that we can't distinguish. We don't know it's intentions. If I had to guess I'd say it most likely represents something more physical that worries you, something you can't quite understand.

In his first lucid dream, I ran into a man-shadow. At first, it looked like my friend, but then turned into a three-dimensional shadow. I grabbed the shade and the sun burned.

      Hello Eclectic

I am constantly studying the shadow people and work with them and deal with them all the time. I made some videos to try to explain them and what there cause is but it may not be what everyone want to understand about them. Here are the links to the videos I made. i am still working through it and trying to get a better understanding of things so there are pieces missing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDMxwqlSq_g and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EslRMb9glQQ

Hello I think I saw a shadow person once when I was around 10 years old. It seemed docile, and I haven't run into one since despite being curious about them. How would I go about purposely seeing or even communicate with one?

I often see glare and reflections on surfaces in dreams, and sometimes even look closely at them (because they seem particularly amazing, but fail to become lucid) however I almost never see any shadows (a dream sign) nor do I generally see light sources (another dream sign, especially a lack of the sun, tho I did see it once in a dream). So sometimes I try to do reality checks in real life in bright sun light by holding up five fingers but looking at the shadow and counting the shadows fingers and then bending the fingers as I watch the shadow.
Sure LUCID DREAMS are all fun and games until someone loses a third eye.
