DNA molecules can 'teleport', Nobel Prize winner claims...

Thanks to Artelis, for spotting this story.

Article: Experiment Spots Spooky Quantum Imprinting Effect

I also registered to New Scientist to read their original story (which is linked at the bottom). It's free to register, but for those who don't want to go through the hassle, I'll copy/paste it here (noting that NewScientist still retains all rights! Lol).

      Spoiler for NewScientist story:

Yeah, and I'm still waiting for that room temperature superconductor article from Bengal to get peer-reviewed, too.

The confirmation of this phenomenon would certainly make the universe more awesome.

It's interesting that bio chemistry would lead to a discovery in quantum physics.

Well, that was Abra's point, I think.

Did it? Ah, well. I was wondering whether not she was being sarcastic.

I'll just leave this here, until the paper is peer-reviewed (hopefully, not by NASA-Alien-Arsenic-Instead-Of-Phosphorous reviewers) :

As an undergraduate I discovered teleporting DNA well before this work was ever done.

My supervisor also decided to erroneously call it contamination.

Unfortunately with more experience of PCR and better work practices etc it became harder and harder to replicate my results - it appears that DNA teleportation only works if you're particularly sloppy - my feel is that not only does water have a memory but can sense competance and immediately hides important science from anyone with more than a little bit of ability - water is very jealous of scientific achievement (while at the same time not recognizing the Nobel prize as meaningful)

If you read the paper, you see that there's not really much going on with any "original" physics.

We will try to interpret the above experimental results in the framework of a recently proposed
theory of liquid water based on Quantum Field Theory (QFT) [6]-[11]. This theory is intrinsically
non-linear and it provides the suitable tools to describe a complex ensemble of processes which
      are also non-linear.
      the paper(PDF)

And when you read it, sure enough, they're taking a recent theory and claiming that explains the phenomenon. Granted, the same crew was responsible for publishing all of those papers as well...

      B b b but.....

I reallly wanted it to be true.

Can it be true just this once?

In a paper last year (Interdisciplinary Sciences: Computational Life Sciences, DOI: 10.1007/s12539-009-0036-7), Montagnier described how he discovered the apparent ability of DNA fragments and entire bacteria both to produce weak electromagnetic fields and to "regenerate" themselves in previously uninfected cells.
Check out who is the Chairman of Interdisciplinary Sciences: Computational Life Sciences (Editorial Board)

Also, see this screenshot from the original paper.

He's basically publishing his own papers in his own journal, without review.

The homeopaths are gonna have a field day with this one.

Also, I think it's just great that this guy is the head of World Foundation AIDS Research and Prevention.

And the replies here cracked me up, love you guys.

EDIT: This is also why un-reviewed, un-repeated studies should not be published to the public.

It gets better. Jacques Benveniste is referenced as the 'inventor' of the device they used to measure EM effects.
Benveniste is a double Ig Nobel prize winner, and you can also find his name on this list: List of experimental errors and frauds in physics - Wikipedia
He was suspected of fraud when a number of laboratories around the world were unable to replicate his results.

In normal circumstances I would say that 'DNA teleportation' study is a case of fraud. But Montagnier is almost 80 years old, so I'll ascribe it to dementia instead.
