Patients Risk Brain Surgery to Fix Shaky Hands

I find this article fascinating, because I've never even thought of the concept of someone with tremors having a job as an explosives-making expert, or a brain surgeon.

I'm also amazed by the idea of having brain surgery done on you while you're awake. I've seen a procedure done like that, it it's surreal.

I was under the impression that quite a bit of brain surgery was done with the patient being conscious because it allows assessment during the operation, rather than completing it, the patient waking up, and realising they can no longer see or something. The lack of pain receptors in the brain is particularly useful in that regard.

It is. The particular bit I'd seen before was on an injured Iraq War veteran, but I believe you're right, and that they do it like this quite often. It's still just an incredible thing to watch and think about, though.

I was going to say that it's absurd to risk damage over a little hand trembling, but that article actually cites that the risk is very, very low, and the people that undergo the procedure have really bad tremors.

If they figure out how to do DBS easily and cheaply, I'd probably get it.
There's so many things it can fix. I've seen a few documentaries to fix OCD with it, as well as depression and anxiety.
And oddly it seems pretty safe, at least once it's in.

Essential tremors would be really bad too. Got it for a while when I was taking anti-depressants.
      Couldn't do anything properly lol

It's also pretty cool how they can induce what matches the description of nirvana/ekstasis by stimulating the right area.

I love how you change the title of the article from "Patients Risk Brain Surgery to Fix Shaky Hands" into "Patients Risk Brain Damage to Fix Shaky Hands" ...thought it would be a catchier thread title? lol.
