With our current technology, we can't tell whether or not quarks are made of something smaller. String (or superstring) theory is the only theory, I know of, that makes an attempt to answer this question. It's been a while since I looked into it, but if I recall correctly, string theory suggests that quarks are made of rings (or strings) of energy, or is otherwise dimensionally unobservable. They are one of the simplest building blocks of matter. Why does the fact that they are as small as you can go warrant explanation? All matter is made of energy, but is not energy. Einstein's theory says only that energy and matter are two different phases of the same thing.
