Copying your mind will mean there will be a second You. You're not in control of your copy. And we have to be careful when talking about computer-consciousness. Mainly because they may not want to do what you're telling them. Who wants a Robot's Revolt?

With the immortalitaly thing, that may not work. First of all, living forever will get boring. Second, if people get born and no one dies, everyone's going to get squashed.

If you could live forever, I am pretty sure you would find ways to entertain yourself fairly quickly. Only an idiot would spend all of eternity watching tv. There is a limitless amount of things one can do in the world.

There are a lot of things to do, but few people will be occupied in doing something forever.

I'd also like to be a person, only a person, not a half-robot thing.

The world is finite and thus has a finite number of things one can do. You would eventually have nothing left to do that you haven't done already. It would take awhile, but it would happen. If we're referring to immortality in the form of replacing human consciousness into machine bodies, then it is not out of the question that the "boredom circuit" could be eliminated and you would never get bored.

That's human sentiment that can be deprogrammed.

If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

The point, in case you missed it, is that you won't particularly care about being a human once you've been put into a robot body that does not have the physical circuit to fear such.

      I'm all for techno-utopian society.

but transhumanism? isn't that when humans have mechanical body parts and such.

I don't like the idea of that..it's too unnatural. Reminds me of I,Robot. I'm all for science and technology, but i don't know, I've already seen what too televisions and cell phones do to the human mind now. Science fiction can't become reality, because it's just that...fiction. It might work, but i don't like the idea of having my natural eyes replaced with mechanical ones or a microchip in my brain.

its more like having nano robots attached to every neuron in your brain increasing your mental processing exponentially and zooming around your circulatory system repairing damage as it happens.

Well the "mechanical eyes" you're imagining wouldn't be anything like the actual mechanical eye. It would likely look and act (and be composed of mostly the same stuff) just like a human eye except it would be optimized. And those mechanical eyes would probably only be given to people who had lost an eye in the past. The odds are for people who still have eyeballs in their heads it would be like what Xaq said.

But should you decide not to accept technological help it will be fine. The Amish get along just fine without technology that runs on electricity and we don't force them to start using it.

      ahh, yea.

What concerned me the most was if the technological "help" was mandatory and I didn't need it. I WOULD want a replacement if I lost a "part" though.

You see how messed up vader was? If you were a parapalgic with burns covering 80% of your body, being given a cyberborg body you can sword fight with would be pretty sweet.

That's human sentiment that can be deprogrammed.
So now we are talking about brainwashing ourselves into allowing us to become less and less human?

I am ok living WITH technology, but not living AS another piece of technology. Who dosen't have pride in being capable of doing an awful lot without any aids?

Or should I say, being a machine?

And if we DID deprogram ourselves so we aren't bored, what will replace this emotion? Joy in doing nothing?

My opinion is that uncontrolled transhumanism could result in the extinction of the human species.

The eventuality is that with the advancement of technology, we will start to merge with it. Just look at pacemakers etc.. The forever prevalent greed for power is going to result in some individuals wanting to become as artificial as possible because superhuman strength etc. would appear godly. Kind of makes sense too because their materialistic thoughts would in actuality be manifesting into reality and consume them. Long term-wise, the species would probably break off into three branches, which it would kind of seem like evolution. One branch being fanatic about organics, one branch being fanatic about inorganics, and one seeing an equilibrium. Basically, ideologies.

Personally, I prefer an equilibrium, which the idea of our species becoming completely inorganic is a nightmare because I feel that is extinction. Trans-humanism is partially responsible for my pursuit of a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics. Yes, I'm rather ambitious, which I find all three degrees compliment each other rather nicely.

I am totally down, however knowing some psychopharmacology tied to a solid understanding of pharmacokinetics can go a long way on its own.

I read through all these posts. Being a sci-fi nerd, this discussion is incredibly interesting, but I feel a little guilty not adding something to it...

I would definitely go for transferring myself into either a robotic body or a self repairing ship to travel the universe. (Or both)

Maybe have mobile platforms you could transfer to in case of need (Geth anyone?)

I find this subject incredibly interesting. If this kind of thing does become available in my lifetime I would definitely consider it (near the end of my life), then as time goes by on earth and we become increasingly able to travel space and such, I would do the above.

Since this stuff is somewhat expected, I say the Singularity Institute better MANDATE and control AI as much as possible to benefit humanity. If it's GOING to happen, I say, make human-created technology completely supportive of mankind. It should be there to assist us, not lead us.

I'm a proponent of natural, organic life as I've mentioned before, and would rather let my life occur and end. We have the means for a near-utopia NOW, but no one puts forth the effort. We always wait until too late to start worrying about problems. We should be considering overpopulation now at an Overpopulation Council, much like this Singularity Institute.

Us humans aren't the best at managing things. If we can't control or at least embed human empathy into a sentient AI right off the bat, we're screwed I'd say.
