Angry I'm Black yet restricted from saying "nigga"? -__-

So I was on the irc chat on here and everything seemed to be going good. Everyone was random but I guess that was alright. Until I used the word "nigga". Everyone started having a problem. Now before you say anything, I'm
      1.) Black(African-American)
2.) Using a word that is not considered a slur but only a term of endearment.
3.) Not even using it in an insulting tone.
4.) 16 and it's a pretty widely accepted word around the urban youth.

Bottom line they all banned me. It's amazing when I'm getting punished for using a word that doesn't even have the same meaning as "the N word". It's similar to calling someone a bro, dude, or brah. Some people don't understand...lol, some people are unintelligent. =P

You have been unbanned from chat for the moment but it's been made quite clear to you that using that word won't be accepted.

2.) It is a slur used by slave owners for hundreds of years in America.
3.) Doesn't matter it insults a lot of people regardless.
4.) Wow really widely accepted word around urban youth. KID this is the internet no one cares if it's accepted widely around the urban youth.

Alright all your points were just terrible please try again.

In YOUR opinion it is irrelevant, but in MINE it relates to the topic at hand.

Mark, so tell me how the word is in ANY WAY negative or offensive and I just might be persuaded. Better yet, tell me the meaning of it. Go on, I'd like to see this.

I wasn't saying that Dreamviews was the "urban youth". I was just simply stating that fact. Although there is an undetermined percentage of people on here that are probably urban youth.

Once again, answer my first question. Why can't I say it? I really think it's just because the word originates from The N word and people just don't understand it. -__-

Oh, boy. Let's see if I can get you to understand.
1.) I'm not sure what you're trying to get at here.
2.) Actually, no. See, it's a very popular misconception. Do you even know the difference between those two words? The N word is indeed a racial slur as you stated bit that's the N word. Not the word I said, "nigga".
3.) We give words power. People are way too sensitive these days. I can't call someone "brah" anymore. That's really crazy and now I can't say "nigga" because they're offended? That's even more crazy. What if the word "the" offends me? You should stop saying that word then, huh? No. As long as a word isn't used negatively I don't understand why I shouldn't say it. Plus, it's a term of endearment.
4.) True, this is the internet but if no one cares then why are you all replying to this point? I used to think if someone doesn't care about a point they wouldn't put effort into it. Saying you don't care about it just makes me think you care more about it. =]

Your replies aren't that great except for the 1st one...I'm iffy about that. Wait, someone may get offended by the word "iffy". I should stop! xD

My opinion and the opinion of the rest of the DV staff, I'm sure. We do not consider the race of anyone in any matter regarding how we run the website. That you are of any given race does not make you subject to special treatment of any kind. Not only that, as this is the internet we cannot know for certain that you are the race you claim. You are not allowed to say it because no one is allowed to say it.

It's really as simple as that. I understand that your usage of it is not meant to offend but something like this can easily be misinterpreted as a racial slur, especially over the internet. It's just a matter of avioding unnecessary drama.

I understand that, but the point is that the standards of the DV community can't be expected to be the same as those for your friends, the urban youth, mine, etc.. Personally I don't find your use of the word offensive. I don't really care what you might call your friends when you are among your friends. But these are my standards and I wouldn't presume to expect everyone to accept them.

Quite honestly I don't mind the word. And yes society doesn't make any sense with all this politically correct bs. I mean quite honestly who gives a shit what you say freedom of speech blah blah blah. Besides doesn't America have bigger problems than backwards bigotry. By that I mean people that label you as a bad person for a word you say. It's funny and retarded. I'd say just forget about it and comply to the rules of this forum because they have 100% authority over your actions at least only on this website. Quit or comply that is the only advice I can give you. Take your political nonsense to somewhere else. Or somewhere else on this site.

According to someone who's desensitized by the use of it in every other rap song. Just because you pronounce it or spell it different, doesn't make it a new word. It's the same thing that's still not socially acceptable to say on this site. Regardless of what your RL "urban youth" friends do.

The thing you don't understand is it keeps the N word alive just as well. Just let it die with all the other racially offensive words before it.

I see. Hey, brah, if I get enough users on this site to say they're offended by ta' word "the" will you stop others from saying that word? As in give them warnings, bans, etc? Now think about that...would that be fair? I'm partially serious right now.

We can always use new members. If you feel like getting people to join to make a "partially serious" point, then by all means, knock yourself out. But just because a person joins the site and gets offended by something that's not mentioned in the http://www.dreamviews.com/f17/forum-...ulations-6754/ doesn't mean we're going to add a new rule for them.

      Holy injustice, Batman!!! -__-
      1.) True, oh well.
2.) So, we should just make words taboo even if the meaning is completely different? Because that word and the N word differ in spelling, meaning and use. It's a term of endearment. It's to my understanding Black people wanted to take the word and make it into a term of endearment. I think that's just whatever. I just use it to call people my dude or whatever. People are very sensitive.
3.) Okay, you got me there with the "lazy" part but just the "lazy" and that's it. And did I say "niggas" in a bad way? No, I used it just like if I would call someone a "dude". And there really is a tone on the internet.

The only reason it's being kept alive is because people keep considering "nigga" to have the same meaning is The N word when it isn't. The only reason The N Word is a taboo is because it's meaning and how it's usually used. I'm not going around calling someone a "nigga" in a bad way because it's meaning is completely different. I'm trying to assert my right to use this positive word yet people are becoming offended because of their lack of understanding. I suggest you watch The Boondocks or something. Shake my head. -__-"

The thing is I can understand why someone would be offended by the use of a racial slur. It is very easy to mistake that for actual racism, which is a sensitive topic to begin with. This isn't so much a matter of catering to the masses as it is avoiding drama. It's just more work than it's worth to go through all that mess over a simple misunderstanding. Not only that, there are those that feel that even using such a word in a friendly fashion is degrading. It's just more trouble than it's worth. There are other words you can use which are free of the stain of racism. Maybe someday in the future when that ancient idea called racism is long forgotten we will be able to use these words like that around everyone. But for now, while racism is still alive and often hiding just under the surface, we won't accept it here.

To answer your question, it makes no sense to simply go with the popular belief simply because it is popular. But in the case of racial slurs, I can see where they're coming from.

Why not? And what if I'm not talking about new members and I'm talking about current members? What if I got the majority of people who are already registered for this site to consider "The T word" offensive? You still wouldn't give warnings and ban people for using it? What if it starts disrupting ta' community? Then what?

Because current members are too smart/don't care about this irrelevant part of the subject because they think for themselves. At this point, theres no need to consider this hypothetical situation.

Jeez, the point is that there needs to be rules based on possible outcomes of doing certain things.

And a possible outcome of saying certain things is someone getting offended or annoyed or something.

It's not that what you said was bad, it's only that some people could have taken offense. It's the same story with how someone was given into trouble for posting the swastika. A possible outcome of that was that someone could have been offended, even though he meant no harm by it.

So is it just okay to say that word outside of the chat? Or is The Lounge forum or just the Senseless Banter sub forum where you can say it?

      http://www.dreamviews.com/f16/moar-rap-logs-80080/

I'm really confused. So we can say whatever we want in this forum? It looks that way to me on this thread. There were admins on there...and you in particular. I'm just confused. I think it's okay to use vulgar profanity as long as it's in that forum, right? Oh, and I'm not being sarcastic either. I don't know a lot about this site.

So you dug up the rap logs, and what did you find? That I wasn't on staff then, and I didn't use the N word. What point are you trying to make? Swearing is accepted on the site.

I know that I'm just a kid and don't know everything but this thread says what in the title? Or is it okay to use that word as long as it's not in chat?

I'm really confused. So we can say whatever we want in this forum? It looks that way to me on this thread. There were admins on there...and you in particular. I'm just confused. I think it's okay to use vulgar profanity as long as it's in that forum, right? Oh, and I'm not being sarcastic either. I don't know a lot about this site.
      Couple of points:

      - The rap logs contain only one instance of the word being directed at a person. The context of which makes it pretty clear it was said in jest. This would be the kind of time where we might overlook something that would otherwise be totally unacceptable and offensive because it's understood that it's all for fun. It's not something that gets by all the time, though. This is true of the use of the word as well as all kinds of different insults that were used in those raps. If you said half of what went down in there all the time, slurs or otherwise, you'd be banned pretty fast even if you were not meaning to be offensive.

      - I'm pretty sure neither I nor Akono were moderators at the time of the posting of these threads.

      - The Katt Williams thread contains a lot of uses of the word but not once is it used to refer to another person. There is a difference between saying the word and calling someone the word.

Nah, I just found that it sorta' makes you look like a hypocrite to be affiliated with that thread even if you weren't a mod at that time. I'm not a mod either and I was getting in trouble. And it doesn't matter if it was the N word or not those were some really offensive words. The B word...degrades females. That's very sexist. And all of those sexual references? Unnecessary.

Aight, man, I feel ya'. I feel ya'. But if you didn't obey by the rules at that time when you weren't a mod what's the difference with me? Oh, and so I can go on the irc chat saying The N word and "nigga" but only if I don't refer to someone? That means I can randomly say it anytime I want just as long as I'm not referring to someone. Thanks, got it! I'll obey the rules now.

And it all was done in a separate room from regular chat. No one randomly started cursing and degrading people like you're trying to depict it. Also, no one said "hey stop doing what you're doing" several times. You kept on saying it in spite of what the ENTIRE ROOM was saying.
