Marie-Louise von Franz "The Way of the Dream"

Marie-Louise von Franz made in 1985

Listening to this old woman's (1st) Three hour Youtube makes me think deeper and deeper. I'm only upto the 2 hour point of her first Youtube. Apparently she's done 4 (long) Dream Youtubes. She makes me reverie. Here is a short Introduction to her.

      (4:38)

This is in the "Show more" under the video:

This is a clip from the opening of a series of films Marie-Louise von Franz made in 1985 with her student, the Canadian filmmaker Fraser Boa. In it she explains her understanding of the subconscious and dreaming. In the whole series there are 20 films in which Von Franz tackles different topics in response to issues raised in filmed interviews with the public. These fall into 4 sections: Introduction to Archetypal Symbolism: Men's Dreams: Women's Dreams: Relationships & End of Life issues. Additionally there are 5 commentaries by Fraser Boa's brother, the analytical psychologist Marion Woodman, who has produced these published DVDs, in which she expands & clarifies certain concepts in the films.
The boxed set of 4 DVDs is available from*Wayofthedream.com

The series will be screened in Wiltshire England Oct 29-31 2010. See*Michael Maxwell Steer The Way Of The Dream

      The dream of Gilgamesh

      (1:29:03)Interviewer:

I would like you to interpret a dream now. The dream of Gilgamesh. (…)

In the middle of the nigh I walked proudly up and down among my people. There were stars in the sky. Suddenly, one of the stars of the Sky God, Anu, fell on me. I tried to lift it but it was too heavy for me. All Eric assembled around this star and the people kissed It's feet.”

Can such an acient dream have meaning for us today?

      Marie-Louise von Franz:

(1:30:00) This dream is about 4,600 years old and still we can find modern parallels. The language of the Unconscious has changed much less than the language of Human Consciousness has. So, if we interpret this dream from a modern stand point we would say that uptil the moment when the star fell upon Gilgamesh he fulfilled the “collective” role of The King. He was the Hero and the King. He was probably a very ambitious man who made a big career. He's the typical man who follows up ambitiously and successfully a collective pattern. Nowadays he would be a great politician or a movie star...(...)

Such a person looked at from within is very Not individual. He's fulfilling a collective roll and fulfilling a roll of power, reacting in a very collective way.

The STAR on the contrary represents, as we saw before, the Uniqueness, because every soul has one star in heaven.

We can say that uptil now we can say that Gilgamesh with all his collective power achievements has not yet done anything unique. On the contrary he has only filled out a typical pattern of the hero king. And now, probably in the middle of life, because that's the most frequently when it occurs, something changes. While he's walking around the people, so to speak, proudly of his own power position, collective power position, from the sky falls a star on his back and turns to be a very heavy load.

That's the moment that the unique destiny befalls him, literally, falls upon his back. That means that from now on one carries on ones back the load (…) the burden of having to become himself. To become the unique, chosen individual he was meant to be. And which he had avoided by being an ambitious collective man uptil now. And that proves not to be a glorious call, but a heavy burden to him.

And now the star means also the immortal soul of man. (…) The star is the eternal kernal of the human psychy, the eternal man within us. And so he is now to follow his unique destiny instead of fullfiling a collective roll.

But the people kiss the star's feet, they prostate them selves before the star which means the real greatness...probably Gilgamesh thought that up until the star fell upon him, that he was a great man. He was a king, he was a hero, he was the fortress of his people. Now he has to see that he is not much. The people worship that star stone that greater thing in him.

So in that dream there's that little teaching for Gilgamesh:

Don't take all the honour people give you for yourself. Don't lap-up the complements they give you for yourself. It is that star upon you and that is your heaviest load, your necessity to become an individual. That's what they worship in you not you.

And so after that Gilgamesh becomes the servant of his unique heroic task, the search for immortality.”

      (1:34:52) Interviewer:

Very few people follow their own star today. Why.

      Marie-Louise von Franz:

It is easier to follow a great personality and become a pupil or follower.

      Dear Reader

What I believe is radically different to everyone else I've heard about. I believe that there is nothing that lives on after death. But, billions of years after the last organic molecule is frozen out of the Universe, "God" comes into being.

That "being" instantly merges with all time and space and becomes eternal soul.

So, I am open to all belief systems.

I love Richard Dawkin's work and I see it fitting hand-in-glove with dream work.

Marie-Louise von Franz (Way of Dream) continued...

      (1:34:54) Interviewer:

Very few poeple follow their own star to day. Why?

Marie-Louise von FranzIt is easier to admire a great personality and become a pupil or follower of a guru or a religious prophet or be an admirer of a big personality like the president of a State or give your life for a General you admire. That is easier than to follow your own Star.

Because to follow your own Star means isolation, not knowing where to go, having to find-out a completly new way for yourself instead of going alond the well-trodden path everyone else runs along. That's why there has always been a tendency in men to project the uniqueness and greatness of their own innerself on outer personalities and become the servants, devoted servants, of outer personalities, admirers and servants and imitators.

      (1:36:13)

      Interviewer

What is the nature of the personality that recieves that projection?

      Marie-Louise von Franz

Generally if sombody has some, by birth, outstanding qualities like intelligence or some other talents. And he or she, in time, attracts the projection. And then people devote themselves to that projection and in that way comes the great temptation to develop an inflation.

An inflation means an over estimation of oneself. Instead of saying my intelligence isn't me and my talent isn't me. I have been born with it, and that's all there is to it. There's no merit. People identify with their gifts and they get blown up like a baloon and they... (...) arrogant mannerism or condecending mannerisms means they have an inflation. (...)

      Interviewer

Inflation then is having a too high or a too low opinion of oneself

But is it possible to get an accurate evaluation of ones own selfe esteme or ones self worth?

      (1:37:51)

      Marie-Louise von Franz

Well the dificulty is that nobody has, by nature, a very good estimation of his values, nobody knows how much or how little he or she is. (...)

Either one has an inferior feeling and thinks they are the lowest worm on earth or they have a superiority complex and feels they are elected far above others and MUST achieve something special.

Most people are between these two. In neurotic people it's extreme and in normal people it's less extreme. But everybody has days where he feels lousy and below thw weather and days where one feels on top of the world,so to speak.

That is a natural swing back and forth.

      (...)

Any lack of balance in this respect when it goes too far below the mark or too far above the mark has an irritating effect on the surounding. If one wants to know if one has an inflation, see if one gets on peoples nerves. Then one is probably over estimating oneself.

      Or

Under estimating oneself because it's the same thing. If one has an inferiority complex it's really AMBITION. One wants to be more than one is. One wants to be a great person and knows one isn't. And so feels like the last worm on earth. That's just a veiled INFLATION, inferiority is a veiled inflation. And that gets on peoples nerves (...)

      Interviewer

I want to get back to something you mentioned earlier. You said that it's easier for an individual to follow in some one elses foot steps than to find their own way. What happens when someone projects their star-out on somebody else? When they project a self-out onto another person?

      (1:41:27)

      Marie-Louise von Franz

Let's first see the positive aspects of this.

      How "projection" happens

Marie-Louise von Franz (Way of the Dream)

      Interviewer

I want to get back to something you mentioned earlier. You said that it's easier for an individual to follow in some one elses foot steps than to find their own way. What happens when someone projects their star-out on somebody else? When they project a self-out onto another person?

      (1:41:27)

      Marie-Louise von Franz

Let's first see the positive side. When the self is projected one falls into a tremendous state of admireing the person on which one projects the self.

And incredible facination and devotion to that person.

That can have the advantage of being capable of learning. If one, for example, projects the self on one who is really wise one can learn a lot.

That is the secret of many miraculous cures. That people project the self onto a healer personality and incredible facination and faith they have in that healer personality, from that faith they are cured from all sorts of psychological and psychosomatic illnesses.

So then it serves as a vehicle of promoting that individual.

Much more frequently, however, this facination results in an infantile giving up of oneself and being, so to speak, flat on ones belly befor the other person, worshiping the great leader or the great spiritual guru.

The projection is a losing of oneself in an infantile way. And remaining infantile, the people are very fanatical in the admiration of that admired person, defending them from the enemies and so on.

And basking in the glory of their master or admired person, for identification. And that saves those people from making an effort themselves.

"The great man or the great woman is going to do it for me, and my task is to only applaud and admire and I have to make no effort to become more inteligent or more independant my self."

So it can just inilelate the personality and make them infantile instead of grow them up and make them independant.

It naturally depends a bit on the person on to whome the projection of the self falls, and whether that person has an inflation, and misuses it, to breed admirers and followers.

      That has disasterous consequences.

But I know also, in the far East, Masters who know about the dangers of the infantile dependancy, and send those pupils and novices back to their own inner task and don't take the projection, so to speak.

      Crashy

At the 0:41:00 point of the 3 hour Part One of "The way of the Dream" they talk about the "Shadow".

Then at the 0:41:39 point they say:

"We filmed quite a humourus example of the interplay of the Shadow and the Ego. In the dream the shadow takes the form of a popular Rock Star who quite litteraly "hooks" the dreamer"

In this dream, I'm going to a David Bowie concert, and I decide I want to talk to this man, David Bowie (...)

The show begins and he comes on and begins o sing his song called "Move on, move on"

      Crashy

That statement made me (immediatly) think of this song by Elvis because I like the cowboy voices saying:

      Immanence

Carl Jung wrote of 'the secret immanence of the divine spirit,' calling it 'the deep truth.' I explore immanence as known in the archetypal dimensions of mind, myth & art.

Immanence is a concept that can only be understood in dialectical tension with transcendence.

Immanence is “the state of being within.” The word is derived from the Latin rooten maneo*(the present infinitive is*manēre) which means “to stay, wait, or remain within” or “I remain within.” The word transcendence is derived from the Latin roots*trans- “from or beyond”, and*scandere*“to climb.” These two concepts form a dialectical unity, expressing shifting perspectives on our relationship with the divine.

Immanence and transcendence are a pair; they are dialectical signifier to each other. Like black and white or figure and ground these concepts can only be fully realized in relationship to each other. Sometimes one aspect is in focus, and at other times the other. But just as it takes a mother and a father to produce a child, so too it takes transcendence and immanence to realize the true nature of being.

Western culture has focused on the idea of transcendence, but immanence has been there all along, awaiting our realization.

(...) (Dear reader I don't understand what I have left out, sorry) (...)

One might say that the base of life is immanence:

      that which ‘remains within’.

      The path is transcendence:

that which ‘goes beyond’ (the development of consciousness).

The fruit is the realization of the divine which is both within us and all around us.

As we explore the psychology of Carl Jung (on this blog) we will see that

the soul (anima) is immanent and “remains within”.*

The ego (persona) is transcendent and “goes beyond”.

The Self is the fruit: as coincidentia oppositorum, the unity of opposites.

I foud the above on Bobbie Ann Pimm's blog. Then Googled it so I could copy a bit and link it to sudy late. Here is the link:

      What is*Immanence? « Immanence

Begining at (32:33) of the (47:05) Youtube 'below', the Tibetan Master and translator for the Deli Lama talks to Richard Dawkins.

And what I heard him say or my brain heard was "learn to be alone and observe from within". (he didn't say that, but that is what I heard.) And what I heard has been changing me as I do it, I'm learning to be alone and observing fron within.

Sex, death and the meaning of Life
      Episode 3
      Richard Dawkins

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w71...e_gdata_player

He said that the happiness experienced from that practice can not be measured.

Now, I find that "thing" on Bobbie Ann Pimm's blog that gives that practice a name, immanence

      Telepathic dreams (Why?)

Dr. Marie Louis von Franz - Telepathic Dreams

"The unconscious arranges dreams that sometime occur in advance of an event like an earthquake. The are very common type of dreams that are always meaningful to the dreamer.

Sometimes the meaning might be to show the reality of the psyche and that the unconscious knows everything."
