      Racism??

I'm a bit pissed off that cartoon network is banning all Speedy Gonzalez cartoons, although I usually only watch adult swim. Their arguments are that it could be considered racist by some and they could end up being sued. Yet there is this new show out about a bunch of little kids (who are obviously Mexican-American) who want to become wrestlers and most of the stereotypes are there, even the well known accent. Personally I don't get offended if the mice in the Speedy cartoons are always sleeping or drinking... we always get the "seņior pussy gato" in the end .

Well I just had to write about it...

Sterotypes a bit of an important part of any show. Else they would have to go over everything bit by bit for five hours just to get to the main point.

On that I agree. On a personal level stereotypes don't bother me. Pile 'em up if they want. But if they think Speedy should be banned, then according to their criteria so should this new show I was talking about.

BTW... Pepe le Pew was a rapist....

They've got to understand and take into consideration the time frame in which those cartoons were created. Most of them were put out during World War II, when such stereotyping and racism was commonplace and more widely accepted. That was the whole point of Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toon name: to poke fun at everyone.

Looney Toons (as well as most animation back then) was never meant for children. It was aimed at the folks in the military and their families in the States, not their kids. If you watch those old cartoons closely, you'll catch references to the war, the military, the political figures at the time, and of course a quite a bit of stereotypical racism. It was adult humor for the time.

Somewhere along the line, American cartoons and animation in general moved the demographic toward children. But the origins of animation in America are quickly forgotten.

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”

I know a kid who is banned from watching Cartoon Network for these very reasons.

Better clean your gun. I can remember some bugs bunny cartoons back when I was young that are no longer aired. There was this one where Bugs Bunny was in Africa and this native was trying to catch and eat him.
Had some strong 'blackface' stereotype action going on.

I am pretty sure they have stopped airing all of the ones that show Japanese in a bad light also.

Yeah they did. Bastards!!! There are 12 banned Bugs Bunny cartoons in total. I have 6 of them downloaded. The one you were talking about was pretty good, it was one of my gavorites from when I was a kid. My favorite of the banned ones is when a German man, is chasing Bugs around and finally catches him. He takes him to Hitler in a bag, and when he looks in the bag he screams "AHHH himmel"(At least it's what I understand) and runs away... then the German guy does the exact same thing... then Bugs comes out dresses as Stalin and says "Does your tobacco taste different latetly"...

In all honesty, i think its fair what there doing. Raceisms taught or picked up. You don't want to send stupid and arogent message to impressiable children like "all black ppl have big lips" or "all mexicans aree illegals". The fact remains that both these are not true.

I work at a Day Care and 1 time a little girl said to another, that "she couldn't be a princess, because she was black." I'm sure the child didn't mean it in a harmful way, but the fact remains is our socitey (*cough* Damn Disney) portays some races in a more positive light.

      Snow white
      Cinderalle
      Sleeping buety
      Repunzelle (does she sount)

only 1 i can think of is Prinecess Jazman (score 1 for disney)
