What is it about my name?

Yeah my name. Well my screen name anyway. Leixor. I invented it around 3 years ago as a name for a character in Final Fantasy XI online. Ever since then people have been misspelling it. They spell it "Lexior". I am intrigued by this. What about it causes roughly 50% of people to spell it that way? I spell it right because I created it. I made it by just typing in stuff till something felt right. I am curious as to how people pronounce it as well. I pronounce it as Layks-or, but sometimes Lex-or. I wonder if the latter pronunciation is what leads to the misspelling... how would you pronounce it?

I would pronounce it Lee-eyecks-ore

my old name was "pOOp" and everybody was spelling it wrong "poop"... nooo, its "pOOp" with emphasis on the OO

as for your name,

they might pronounce it that way because it makes more sense

the "i before e except after c" thing and there are exceptions in the list but leixor isnt in the list

Lexior sounds like a prescription drug :D

people say lexior because it sounds better and is less awkward for an english speaking mouth.

I thought it was Lexior because I skimmed over it once before replying to one of your posts.
I think it might also have to do with the commonality of the arrangement of letters. The -ixor, I think is a lot less common than the -ior suffix that is on many words in english.
Just goes to show how much of a role expectation plays in how we perceive reality. Heh.

But now that I see how it's actually spelled, I agree that it's pronounced Layk-sor. I don't even think Lehk-sor would be correct, but hey, it's your name. :wink:

Haha... yeah I've always felt the correct pronunciation was layk-sor myself. The funny thing is if I just read over it without thinking about it I tend to say Leck-sor. I think your right about the way its arranged though. The way it originally came about was when I was creating a name for my character, I wanted something completely original, so I came up with names, and then googled them. Leixor was the first thing I came up with that got ZERO hits. Funny... googling it now returns 21 hits. A few in a different language, and the top one an index from this board lol. (Just to note: Lexior returns 1350, seems more common) Actually I remember having this discussion on FFXI one night. One of my friends on there had his character named "Xaio". No one quite understood how to pronounce it, including myself. According to him the correct pronunciation is "Zai-o" and its chinese in origin. It's kinda funny how the brain interprets things that are foreign to it huh.

I think in English, Lay-ksor would be the correct pronunciation, but in German (someone correct me if I'm wrong; I don't really know German all that well) it would be Lie-ksor.

When I saw your nickname I read it as lay-ksor (difference with layk-sor? - well I just read x as one letter not two which would be my case in layk-sor)

It sounds wierd, lexior sounds better but it loses its uniqueness.

ad Xaio: Seems to be chinese but Xiao is a Chinese name not xaio...I would read Xaio the English way (for me) - "Zai - o" but it's likely that I would call this person Xiao with the chinese prononciation.

My nickname is S'Tsung N'Avana and it is irregular. You read the "s" as "es" and Tsung is pronounced in a chinese way. N'Avana is pronouced as it is nah - vah - nah. (japanese prononciation NAWANA). How would you read my name?

I know that French speaking people never managed to call me S'Tsung but the rest of world usually yes...

Hmmm. Before I read your post my mind read it as "sung" eg "He sung a song" After reading what you said about the "s as es and Tsung is pronounced in a chinese way". I have no idea. I am completely unfamiliar with chinese pronunciation. Is it a long u like "oo" which would make it "Es-soong"? Haha I am completely lost, please forgive me for butchering your name -.-;
