Lol, I know those, I've been learning French for a long time. (4 yrs.) All we ever learn are words, conjugation's, etc. We don't learn how to practically speak in French, which is a shame. If I'm trying to speak in French, my mind has to first register the English, then translate it. IMO that is a very sucky way of learning a language. Grod, it really depends. They are quite distincted languages, completely different ones at that. But they're ridiculously similar. Apart from some very few false cognates, any speaker of one language can understand the other (but not speak, though).Quote:

I've been meaning to learn one of them, I've been to Spain several times, and Portugal once, so I've wanted to learn either one since I like the sound of each so much. I didn't really pay attention enough to see if they are close.
I suppose Spanish would be more useful. I really do like the sound of Portuguese though.
Spanish has a smaller lexic, is easier to learn and more regular. If you're only up for one of them, choose spanish - even because more people speak it.
Portuguese is more complex, but once you learn it, it becomes easier to learn Spanish. Simply because the whole of Spanish is encompassed in Portuguese. Portuguese has some sounds, words and grammar that Spanish doesn't, making it harder to learn them later on.
