Yeah, Tuesdays suck... 4 hours of sleep, 10 hours of school.
I'm enjoying the lodge's wireless internet right now, watching Within Temptation music videos on YouTube. :D
WOOHOO!
Im done with my french project and now proceed to Literacy.
Wish me luck. Its a long journey ahead.
*sighs*
Yo man, I'm paying for the fuckin' studio time you fuckin' chakaraka!"

Note to self: Super Glue is very sticky. It was first created as an emergency skin bonding material for war wounds. Keep fingers off.
I gotta pee!

Oh, no ... wait ... too late.
Well, I got the sound system set up fine, no problems, no hitches, everything is working smooth. The only thing is a slight bit of noise in the background, but I think that's pretty much going to stay, because the speaker wire is unshielded and there is no end of wireless and electronic equipment in the vicinity. With a bit of experimentation, I can probably work it out using the equalizer, or at least make it so faint that it isn't noticable. I seem to be the only one who heard it, anyway. Everyone else is mostly older folks.
We've got a stereo, a keyboard, and a computer hooked up; we'll be using the house system for microphones, as they have a wireless lapel mic, with a reciever built into the podium. I'll be playing the DVDs on my laptop, with the sound going to the mixer and the video to a projector, via VGA. All equipment is plugged into the same circuit, on a power strip. I'm set up on a table right in the middle of the room, with classroom tables surrounding. So, should be fun!
Tomorrow will be the true test though, that's when we'll actually be using it. GH, if you have any useful tips, I'd appreciate any free knowledge. ;-)
Well, unshielded speaker wire won't cause that. In fact, you don't want the speaker wire to be shielded. Any hum has to be coming from either a bad ground (is the power strip grounded properly?), a lousy input cable (like from the keyboard, etc...) or a problem within one of the units you're using. Some mixers have a two-way power switch that reverses the "polarity" of the ground. Some others have a "polarity" switch near the power cord. That may be your hum culprit there.
I don' t know where this is set up at but, if there are any neon lights connected to the same circuit, that can cause amp hum as well. You are talking about a hum, right? Or is it a different kind of noise you're referring to?
Is the noise on all inputs or just one? You might try setting all of the mixer inputs to minimum. That should help you determine if the hum is coming from one of the input sources or if it's a noisy AC power line. If the noise goes away then raise the volumes one by one to figure out where it's coming from.
Also, if the mixer has inputs that are designed for stereo (three conductor) cables for the purpose of effects looping (ground-send-return), then one of those might be your problem. You'd have to unplug the inputs and see if the noise goes away if so, you may be using the wrong kind of cables.
if GH's advice doesn't work:
You may need to buy an audio isolator 4-channel/ground loop isolator???
oh and try runnin your laptop from battery battery? Using the outlet could fuck with it.
I dont know much about what your dealing with... only car systems :P
Good points, Michael.
True, the switching power supplies used for laptops may well be introducing noise into the amp's AC line, which is in turn amplified to annoying levels.
Michael mentioned a line isolator, a proper line conditioner might do the trick. Unfortunately, they can be expensive for a one-shot use. But, if you have access to one - try it.
If you can't find it, try unplugging the laptop. If that stops the noise then run an extension cord to an outlet on a seperate circuit breaker line.
Thanks for the advice, GH. I definitely appreciate it. I should have clarified; it is a hum, but only one input was active (and thus turned up) at the time - that from the laptop. Seeing Michael's post reminded me that we had a similar hum in our setup last year, and it turned out to be as simple as just using one of those three-prong-to-two-prong plugs for the computers, thus un-grounding them, and breaking the apparent ground loop. I did some (more) reading on the subject, and it appears that that is most likely the culprit, as ground loops seem quite common, and produce just the sort of hum we've got. So in the morning when I hook my laptop back up, I'll use one of those plugs. With luck, that'll be that.
I finally think I've grasped a better understanding of the equalizer, too. I found a few good sites explaining the general ranges of voice/instruments, and what adjustments affect which areas of the overall sound, and I think I can take that and run with it. I already knew, of course, that I should only make the smallest of possible adjustments, and now I know a bit better what I'm actually affecting with a particular slider. As with most things, it'll be a trial-and-error experience, but the more knowledge the better, right?
I can't wait for the dulcimer player and the bluegrass band to come in. I'm not sure whether they'll bring their own equipment or not; I dearly hope they do. :D
Anyhow, thanks, GH, and you too, Michael. I hope just using that plug will solve the problem, but if it doesn't, I can figure it out using what you said, GH. Wish me luck, and I'll let you know how it goes!
Good luck, MOS
cool as a summer breeze
I never really liked the summer breeze. In fact I was never really a huge outdoor person. The worst is when the sun in glaring in your eyes and you can feel the heat burning into your skin. And sand! Ugh that stuff gets all over you! Don't get me started on seawater.
But there's something about green pastures that hits me in the heart!
The sun, the sand and the sea water: the three reasons I don't like beaches.
But, I do walk every day that it's not raining and am getting ready to mow my lawn. It don't really care for the outdoors as much as I once did but some things have to be done.
On a side note, I'm down 29 pounds now. Another 11 and I'll be right where I want to be.
...blowing through the jasmine in my mind.Quote:

Good deal. Walking is something that not nearly people do. I try to walk a ways whenever I can myself. As for the outdoors, it's usually so doggone hot and humid here in the summer that the only time you can enjoy the outdoors is early morning, because in the evening the mosquitoes come out. In hunting parties. They bring their friends, too. But fall is here now, and in another few weeks it'll be cool enough in the day to get out and about more. As of then, expect a flood of knife and knife-making pictures. I'll be seriously starting up soon after I get home.
Oh, and nice! You've made a lot of progress, GH, and in a fairly short time, too. Good luck, man.
You wouldn't like living here then! We have sun, sand, sea and me! There are 4 reasons :P haha!
Anyway on a side note; WHY did I order that Margarita? I will tell you why!! 2 words Mes 'bloody' Tarrant, okay it is not her fault entirely, and that is three words, I guesss I should havre read what gopes into a Margarita!!! :bang: I hate Tequila :(
But I washed it down with a Black Russian, Long Island Ice Tea, Purplpe rain, Mojito, Pina Colada, Tuscan Mulle and a Sambuca :D
Meh, I am gladd I lovst my phone! Don't wannt to be making any drunkert calls tonight :D
