In a shady bar on the wrong side of town, I sat nursing my Scotch on the rocks. The band was playing a sultry jazz tune, the kind of sultry that only manages to sound sleazy. I had things on my mind, big things. Real big things. The kind of things that can get you killed if you mention then out loud. I was trying not to think about these things, trying to push them back with more Scotch. I was on my fifth, and planning to go on until my wallet ran out. I was sitting there in my shadowed booth when I heard a voice over the bad jazz.

"Is this seat taken?"

It was a woman's voice, a seductive voice. A voice a man could lose himself in. I'd probably already had too many Scotch on the rocks, I was beginning to over-dramatize things. I looked up, the brim of my fedora raising, letting me see the owner of the voice. A brunette, tall and perfect. She had legs that didn't seem to end and a chest a blind man couldn't keep his eyes off of. Her face looked like an actress', well-defined cheekbones, full lips, long eyelashes and eyes so blue you could see the sea in them.

"It wouldn't matter if it was, for a woman so beautiful as yourself. Please, have a seat." I tried a charming smile, but my mood wasn't quite up for it that night. She sat down, her every move graceful and gorgeous. Looking me straight in the eye, she asked just what I'd hoped she wouldn't.

"Are you Jack Kilkenny?"

So she was just looking for me to hire. "That's me, sugar. I'm afraid I'm not taking cases just now, though. Got too many already." The brunette's blue eyes studied mine carefully, looking for something. Something I probably didn't have, like good character, or humility. You never know with women.

"I think you might be interested in this one. It's related to a case I believe you're familiar with, the Benning murder?"

There it was. How she knew I had no idea, but that's what I'd come here to drink away. Tom Benning, father, husband, respected citizen. Found murdered in his bed, a bloody knife not ten feet away, left on the dresser. Thing was, he wasn't stabbed. He'd been shot, a dozen times, right in the unmentionables. His wife was away at the time, his son was at a sleepover, everybody that knew him had an alibi. That's where I came in. And I'd found out something I wasn't supposed to. Something that, if it got out I knew, could get me killed. How this broad knew was beyond me, but she did. I could tell. And I'm never wrong. It's what makes me so good at what I do.

"What do you know about the Benning case?" I asked reservedly, dreading the answer. When it came, it surprised me. "I was Tom Benning's mistress."

Haha. NO WAI!. I'd say it would take at least in the range of 50 to 100 years, possibly thousands, but certainly not before twenty. Supercomputers at the moment cannot begin to simulate one single human neuron to a good degree of pysical accuracy. If you look at the AI which is going on at the moment - and I have studied a fair bit of AI - the tasks are incredibly, incredibly simple, most of which can be broken down into a standard search scenario. Sure, they can beat us at chess, but chess is not human intelligence.

The human brain will never be realised in silicon of course. Quantum, molecular and other systems are the way to succeed, but research (let alone real experience) in these are still in its infancy.

In 10 years have fun with your XBox 720 or your hyper-flat monitor that uses virtually nil power with 10,000 x 10,000 resolution. But don't expect it to be any more intelligent than computers are now, not by an order of magnitude at least.

I have written an essay on Kurzweil. I have since become quite skeptical of his ideas. There may be a paradigm shift in computers, but not any time soon.

Now this was surprising to me, seeing as how in all my digging, I hadn't found any mistress. Just the one Leonetti hired, but I'll explain that later. So when this lady came to me claiming to be Benning's mistress, I was naturally suspicious. Tossing back the last of my Scotch, I set the glass down on the table. I was trying to think this through in my head, but five Scotch on the rocks tends to slow down even the best of minds. I let what she'd said sink in good before replying, "What's your name, lady?"

At my question, the brunette started looking flighty, like she was about to get up and run away before answering me. I didn't want that, so I called the waiter over to get her a drink. "Fred, something to calm the lady's nerves." Turning to her, I asked her what she'd have. "A gin and tonic, please." So, she was a gin woman. I liked that in a woman. "Alright, never mind your name. How did you get my name?"

"A friend told me you were hired for this case by his wife, that it looked like she killed him, and she wanted you to prove that she didn't."

Well, that wasn't exactly it, but it was close enough. Turned out the wife's alibi didn't hold up, her family she was supposed to be staying with hadn't seen her that weekend. But it was her brother that had hired me, trying to help his sister out. The former Mrs. Benning didn't want me on the case. That was when I'd known something was up here, something less than obvious. "Close enough. How long had you been his mistress?"

"A few months, no more. I don't know what to do, I heard on the news about the other woman that says they were having an affair, but that's impossible. He just didn't have the time."

Just then, Fred arrived with her gin and tonic, and another Scotch for me. Nodding my thanks to him, I left my drink on the table. I needed to think. If she really was his mistress, when did they ever meet? I'd been over this before, Benning really didn't have the time. I asked her, "When did you ever see Benning?"

"We would meet whenever he had a little time, on his business trips. We worked together, in seperate branches."

So that's how they managed it. But that still left what she had come to tell me, assuming it wasn't just that she was Benning's mistress. This I was curious about, especially since I had considered the case solved. Even if I couldn't actually say so. "So what else do you know?"

"Have you ever heard of Leo Leonetti?"

There it was. The last name I wanted to hear right now. Leo Leonetti, the biggest crime boss in the nation. He liked to work politics rather than just killing his victims outright. He was also connected, in a very big way, to this case. And if he found out I knew that, I'd be his next victim.
