Seriously, they make sure the rest of society doesn't have to sleep with ugly people...
Ok that is a joke but really I can't see much of a reason against prostitution.
I know I would like people not to be hookers but who am I to say no? lol

STDs
STD's are a much bigger problem when prostitution is illegal. When it is legal, the government can require the prostitutes to be tested on a regular basis, and brothels are much more public, so word about them travels more freely. That keeps the prostitutes pretty clean. The prostitutes who get STD's don't get to work at the best places, and they don't get to work at any of the legal places. When prostitution is illegal, things are much more underground, and the government does not get to regulate businesses that are trying to stay hidden from them. The result is prostitutes who have STD's that the public does not know about. If STD's are the issue, then prostitution needs to be legal.
I think there is only one reason for the illegality of prostitution-- RELIGION. Christians think they are falling short of the Lord's expectations if they allow prostitution, so they all push for it to be illegal. That is it. I really see no other reason for it.
George Carlin said, "Buying things is legal. Sex is legal. Why isn't buying sex legal?" I agree. Prostitution should be legal. Freedom is a virtue.
By the way, why is this in Senseless Banter? :whyme: This seems like an excellent thread for Extended Discussion, or perhaps even better for Religion/Spirituality.
A vice law, essentially a religious law, is for social control.
The early(and current churches) were ashamed of their bodies, and thinking about sex is a sin... yada yada yada... if it made their priest uncomfortable it should be illegal.
(And the Carlin quote is... "Selling is legal, fucking is legal, then why isn't selling fucking legal?" But close enough, lol)
I think it is an issue so important that it can't be talked about enough. When prostitution is finally legalized, a lot of society might finally say, "Hey, what other religious nut laws do we need to get rid of?"
Oh, he probably made the point a hundred times and didn't say it the same way every time. Whatever it was, he made a great point.
Yea, and then the government would not have to waste thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars stopping them and could tax it.
People wouldn't look down on hookers anymore. Well...maybe as much as they look down on strippers.
I personally think that if pornography is legal, then prostitution should be legal. I mean...what exactly do you think is going on in porn? They aren't being paid for sex? hehe.
Oh my bad, their being paid to let people "watch" them have sex, lol right.
You all disgust me. I swear to god, males create all the problems in the world.
You know a place with some really good, legal action? South Korea. You can have all the 12 year old girls you want. I think you'd enjoy it there.
 Not one of you seems to care enough to stop and think about the mental health of women who are prostitutes, or who would be prostitutes were it legal. Not one of you. I can't say I'm surprised.
Yea, women don't enter the realm of prostitution for fun or curiosity. Most of the time it is to fund drug habits, and to a lesser extent for money to survive (in LEDC's at least). Legalising it doesn't help as it is highly correlated with other criminal activity.
Which is exactly why it should be legal. Prostitutes have no rights currently and are often brutally abused by their pimps. If it were legal, they would be guaranteed rights by the government like other legal workers. Actually, I think legalization would benefit the women more than anyone.
And this discussion is not about child prostitution, that's a different subject. You may note that allowing legal sex between adults (I'm talking about regular sex, not prostitution) does not put children in any more danger of being sexually molested.
As long as there are condoms I don't think I would "never" be a prostitute. Maybe not all my life but every now and then. I don't have an issue with ugly women...and I just have to close my eyes with ugly men...lol
Condoms the great equalizer!
Meanwhile I would have to study in depth other std's before I considered the option.
Anyways. I don't know how it is "immoral." Two consenting adults having sex is not immoral. The only way it is immoral is if you are lying to your lover, wife, or husband about the idea that you are mutually exclusive to each other.
Meanwhile i'm on the fence, I don't know if I would want it to be legal or not. I happen to think that if it were legal, then those who are prostituting could be mandated by the gov. and even perhaps have the gov. create a special program to help them get an education if they desire it for when they are older and can no longer provide their service. On the other hand there are a lot of old hookers.
And how would we bring aid to women who are hiding from us because their profession is illegal and they live in fear of retribution by their pimps? Criminals are in charge of prostitutes because the profession is illegal, if it were legal it would attract different managers who would be willing to play by the rules. Look at prohibition: during prohibition criminals took charge of the distribution of alcohol which led to a great deal of violence, but now that alcohol is legal violence is not associated with the distribution of it.
Or look at abortion: women used to die in foreign countries getting illegal abortions. Because the abortions were not documented, the men providing them were not held accountable for the women's deaths. Now that abortion is legal, it is a safe procedure.
When you make something illegal that people will do anyway, you are begging criminals to take violent control of it. In this case it is the women in the profession who must pay for the consequences.

You are saying that we should leaglise prostitution because in its illegal form we cannot control it? It seem ironic. How will leaglising it (essentially taking tax) help?
Why does prostituion exist, because it provides money. Why do these women need money? because they are often victim to drugs. Legalising it does not negate the drug problem.
You sure it's drugs?Quote:

But you realise that prostituiton is two-tier?
Absolutely. If you want to give aid to women, you can do it in cleaner ways.
Does no one (other than psych student) realize how dangerous a prostitute's life is? Legal or not, she has a high chance of getting raped, beaten, even killed. You're all for this, then? Huh??
Women going out and offering their bodies for money to feed their children or whatever else is NOT THE SAME THING AS TWO ADULTS HAVING CONSENTUAL SEX. For fuck's sake.
Joe, I'm sorry but this is not a good time to stereotype. :? You honestly think women work as prostitutes to buy god damn hand bags?
