      pickled cucumbers

      why are pickled cucumbers just called "pickles"? there are lots of other pickled things, like pickled eggs, pickled pigs feet...

      how come only pickled cucumbers get to be called pickles? what makes them so special? :\

      Probably because of its evident popularity over other pickled things, people thought they should shorten it. Wikipedia says it is "most often simply called a pickle in the United States and Canada", so I am assuming that other countries call it something else.
