Thread: It happened

The sun poured forth its oppressive rays. Mine eyes shrieked in protest. It was all I could do to drag one foot in front of the other. Previous routines, from a past life, guided my stride, as my transition lenses failed to do their job. It took minutes, but, to me, the journey lasted mere moments. I was inside, and the light could harm me no more.

It happened.

The station was wet, they were all under the shelter but I kept walking. That clarity that happens when the sun breaks the clouds. It was so blinding; I withdrew and stumbled momentarily, hearing the screech.

I was the first, then it happened.

I could stand.
Everything around me was falling apart, the women and children wouldn't look at me, and my friends had all seen the true Self.
Forcing a smile, I continued the show. Whoring myself to the world.

It happened.

I tried to breathe as silently as I could, I don't think they knew I was there.
One by one, they walked away, I don't know how many remained.
My legs were cramped, a few hours must have passed, I moved them to get in a more comfortable position. They heard.

It happened.

The clock struck twelve as I lean against the pillar of the decaying subway station. Bleak and dim, this place repelled even the most vile of pests.

In the months of late I had made a habit of roaming the areas of the urban blight abandoned by the encroaching darkness of night. Without the warm, bright faces of their caretakers, the cold constructs of humanity could be experienced in their true form. As I had come to realize, the world we felt we lived in was merely a facade covering an ugly truth.

Ever since the third Great War ended and countries turned their war machine to the foe within, city after city, civilization after civilization, fell under their own instinctual paranoia. The creatures termed demons infesting every corner of the globe turning brother against brother, father against son.

And here I was, standing in the last crumbling piece of what would soon be nothing more than a page in a book for those that fled to space.

I reached into my pocket, feeling for my last broken cigarette and lighter to match. No need to save them, I knew I didn't have long.


And then it happened.

The white, warm light of the sun fell on my face, warning me. Trying it's best to wake me from my deep sleep before the beast awoke. But to no avail, and instead of gentle light, my beautiful sleep was interrupted by a screaming monster. It kept on screaming at me, no matter how many times I hit it on the head. Some times it needed a few minutes to recover, but always it sought to alert me to the new day dawning.

It happened.

Every single day, we met we kissed, and we parted.
And it was good.
But I still did it anyways.
Taking the nozzle to my face, I let the mask drown me with air, sleeping as only the truely asleep can. No farewells or sappy goodbyes, thought entirely absent in my gagged attempt to feel special.
I'd love to add something dramatic about 'never waking up again', or some shit like that
But it just happened

It happened.

Lock eyes from across the room
Down my drink while the rhythms boom
Take your hands, skip the names
No need here for the silly games
Make our way through the smoke and crowd
The club is the sky and I'm on your cloud
Move in close as the lasers fly
Our bodies touch and the angels cry
