Better to wake up early on weekends?

Why do people sleep in on weekends? I mean I know they have work/school and need to sleep late but doesn't that mess up your sleep cycle- if you stay up late on Fridays (which I usually do) and then sleep way in on saturdays and sundays, then doesn't your sleep pattern get totally messed up and then you are just digging your orwn grave for Monday morning?

So what I am asking is- is it better to wake up early on weekends so that you are forced to go to sleep early?

Speaking of which, I have been trying to get a good sleep schedule going for the start of school but I have been failing. rigt now it is 12:30 am. I am wondering is it better for me to sleep in tomorrow (today) or should I wake at like seven?

You should never sleep in. Wake up at the same time EVERY DAY, regardless of when you fell asleep, regardless of what day it is, etc.

I wake up at 5:30am Mon - Thurs, and on Fri - Sun I get up at 8:00. Usually I go to bed around 11 - 11:30. I find sleeping in a couple extra hours on weekends gives me the energy to wake up early for the following week.

Unless of course I stay out until 3-6am then I just set my alarm for 8 hours later and wake up whenever that is
