Everyman again

This will be my second time trying Everyman, but this time I'm going to adjust to it and stay on it. The last time was towards the end of the semester, and I didn't have enough time practically to adjust to it. But its still the beginning of the semester, and I intended on going for it again, so here I go...

Alright, this is my sleep schedule:

3:30-6:30am core
12:30pm nap
7:00pm nap
1:30pm nap

I may deviate around the 12pm and 7pm hours because of lunch or obligations at night, otherwise it should remain pretty consistent. My class schedule allows for this pretty much every day unless there's a recital or something at night that I have to go to. I also realized that I wasn't technically doing "Everyman" last time since my core sleep was longer than 4 hours. So far today's been fine, I made my 12:30pm nap, so hopefully the rest of today goes well.

I've only experienced a few weeks of polyphasic sleep before, so going all the way should be a interesting challenge.

Day 2

Woke up on time, got in all my naps yesterday. Feeling tired, but nothing out of the ordinary. Got up at 6:30 and got breakfast as usual. I was talking with someone yesterday and they had asked me about how many meals I would be eating. I do end up more hungry in the later hours, and it would make sense to have a snack or something extra later since your body needs the energy to stay awake. At least, I don't know about diets and polyphasic sleep schedules, but for me personally I do better eating as well balanced meals as I can and more like 4 times a day instead of 3. Maybe this is correct maybe not, but I still plan to try to get some long walks/exercise in when I can too. I always keep having cravings for string cheese too. This guy also mentioned something about Einstein on a polyphasic schedule, but I can't verify it.

And I did have some really vivid dreams, although I can only recall one part of them. I suspect my recall will improve once my mind gets more used to Everyman.

Day 3

I woke up on time, got my 12:30pm nap, although it might've been slightly longer than 20 minutes. A little more sleepy today, and if it weren't for me getting out of bed right away I think I might've overslept. On a interesting note though, I didn't set any alarms for my 12:30 nap (actually looked at the time before I closed my eyes, and it was actually more like 12:35) and I still was able to wake up after approximately 20 minutes. Apparently auto-suggestion still works the same way as if you had an affirmation to wake up at a certain time after a full night's worth of sleep. But this make take some believing and confidence on your part as well, because in my mind I reasoned that since I've trained myself to wake up at certain times before, I could do it with 20 minute naps as well.

It took me a little while to wake back up, and walking around outside helped a lot. Being outside in general helps, especially getting some sun during the day. I'm also slightly more hungry during certain times, but its not been a problem. Days are starting to feel really long again, and it already seems like tons of time has passed since wednesday. So its been good so far, although yesterday I missed my 12:30 nap. Should be able to get all of them in tonight.

Hey there, good luck! I've thought about doing it but then decided I would get bored easily at night because all I'd be able to do was homework, reading and watching movies. I guess it would be awesome for exam studying though. I might do it then...

Well, I'm a music major so I'll be able to get in as much cello practice as I want lol, but after I'm adjusted I'll also use it for reading and homework. And to just generally chilling out from things. But I'm a somewhat night person already and enjoy being up at night, and I can also use any extra time possible to focus and center myself more. I also feel like the Everyman polyphasic sleep cycle is right for me, and in the short term it feels like I'm functioning better on it. I'll have to see in the long term how it is.

Yesterday went well, except for my last nap. I went to sleep at about 1:40am and overslept through my phone alarms to about 4:30am. :( and I was doing so well up to this point, so I felt disappointed that I didnt wake up after 20 minutes lol. My phone wasn't set at the highest volume for the alarms, so that might've had something to do with it. I was also sleeping on a really comfortable couch, and the lights were off. I'm thinking that my 20 minute naps should at least be in low-lighting, if not all the way on so I don't oversleep. Perhaps I was just too comfortable in that room too lol.

So, I went to sleep again around 5:10, woke up at 6:30 but fell back asleep, then woke up at 7:30. Today I might take 10 minute naps/rests instead of 20, so I can get back to Everyman tomorrow, since I want my body to still realize this pattern of napping. And because I got too much sleep last night...

Day 5

Did NOT wake up on time after core sleep, I felt "really tired" and even though I woke up to my 6:30 alarm several times I ended up falling back asleep. If I can muster up the will to wake up right after my core sleep, I think I can make it through this adjustment period. I did successfully make all my naps yesterday without sleeping through them, and regardless of too much sleep this morning, I'm still going to at least rest during my nap times even if I don't fall asleep.

I got about 7.5 to 8 hrs of sleep last night... so its going to feel "tiring" trying to wake up at 6:30 everyday this week, but I've got to do it :meditate:.

Nothing out of the ordinary, but seems like dream recall is increasing. I'll have to wait and see how it is after several days of strict adherence to my schedule. Good thing that tomorrows monday so I'll have more incentive to wake up on time since I've got class :D.

So overall, doing fine (except for the fail this morning) and just need to go for it.

Day 5 (continued)

I decided to not nap at all today (since I got almost a full amount of sleep this morning) and I will resume my everyman naps tomorrow. Still about and hour and 40 minutes to go. Weee :panic:

Day 6

I awoke a half hour later than I intended, but did get my 3 hr core sleep in. Got some laundry done and played some cello before I went to sleep. Those extra hours definitely helped with that, and it seems like my mind is starting to get used to whats going on. So far feeling awake and fine (I did have coffee this morning during breakfast though). I had a martial arts class earlier so I got a little bit of exercise in as well. Will plan on taking my naps at the usual times and hopefully all goes well.

Day 7

All goes well, even was taking a music theory test this morning and understood everything >_<. So, from now I'll be posting a week's worth of everyman logs instead of posting daily, unless its something really noteworthy or funny.

I accidentally fell asleep after my core sleep this morning, and because of that I slept four extra hours. Now it seems like having this much sleep (7 hours) is unnecessary lol. I feel more centered on Everyman (four hours of sleep) than I do from oversleeping this morning. Overall I feel pretty adjusted, but I'm still giving myself another week or so of just focusing on making my naps before I start to utilize these extra hours. Even though it seems like I'm pretty much adjusted, I don't want to stress out my body/mind in case I'm not.

Day 13

This weekend I ended up sleeping in on sunday, and coupled with accidentally falling asleep as described in my last post, I'm not sure how it'll be getting back onto Everyman this week. Last night I was passing out and couldn't stay up until 3:30am, although I didn't take any naps during the day either. I might experiment with getting one night's worth of normal sleep, which would be saturday night/sunday morning, and the rest of the week be on Everyman. I don't know if I can do this, but if I'm able to be back on Everyman from today until sunday then I could probably be able to make the switch.

Or it could just be me not sticking strictly to the schedule enough and therefore my body isn't adjusting completely. I know it can take up to a month or more to adjust to Everyman and it also isn't such a dramatic shift in comparison to Uberman (2 hours total, six 20-minute naps). But, I havn't "crashed" in the sense that I've not felt exhausted or drained of energy in any way. So even though I've made some "mistakes" with either oversleeping a couple times or choosing to sleep in once, overall its seemed like I've been adjusting fairly well.

I'm interested in trying a schedule like this when I go off to college. I already know what I'd do with the free time. :P I've heard of a few success stories with this and they seemed very energetic after the process of adjusting. Has the intensity of your dreams been increased at all? I would think that squeezing that much sleep into naps would really boost the vividity.

For me personally I havn't had recall at all from my 3-hr core sleeps, and skipped my noon nap yesterday and that completely messed me up and caused me to sleep in lots this morning. But, every time I go from Everyman back to sleeping more than 5 hours at once, I always have extremely vivid dreams. If and when I adjust completely to Everyman, then I will see how my dreams are affected. Right now its my 15nth day of attempting Everyman, and these past few days have been met with successes as well as mistakes. I think I know now why it takes longer to adjust to Everyman than Uberman, because with Everyman you still have somewhat of a core sleep which determines a sense of "day" still, whereas Uberman seems like it forces you to immediately adjust you to the six 20-minute naps.

Also, my primary reason for doing Everyman is to utilize these extra hours, not exactly for the dreaming part. And again, I have noticed that dream-like states have been more and more apparent in my naps, but not so much recently since I've been a noob with making some mistakes. And it is a significant lifestyle change, especially since I have to nap at specific times, and there's going to be times where I'm going to either nap later or skip a nap, and it was really tough yesterday. Don't know why it was so difficult without that nap, but it shows that I really needed it and that my body/mind is recognizing my Everyman schedule.

So I'm just moving forward now and am going to try to not make mistakes like I have. My enemies have been couches, not getting up right after sleep/naps, and thinking I can skip naps this early in my adjustment period.

Ok, so I didn't sleep at all last night (and today is also day 18 of everyman, I put down the wrong number yesterday) and I'm feeling fine so far lol. So, I deviated a ton from Everyman last week, and at the moment I am trying to stick as closely to it as possible. Realistically I've been able to gain hours to my day, but its difficult sticking to the naps because of either school obligations or hanging out with friends. But for the sake of experimenting with Everyman, it can work, but it takes work to maintain.

And I know I said I'd post log stuff... I'll get to that eventually. But, I'll keep reporting on this, because I feel like my body is adjusted to this sleeping pattern despite having overslept (and not slept at all) last week. Feeling a little bit of jet lag, but nothing unbearable. If I never get to the point of exhaustion like getting deprived of sleep on monophasic, then it means Everyman is practical in the sense that it enables you to get less sleep and still function normally. But so far I've not had good dream recall, and it seems to me that it is also a need of the body. Usually I have more recall because of more sleep, and although its been increasing steadily, I still feel like my body is more focused on refreshing itself then remembering dreams.

As far as school and cello goes, its been normal and I've been alert and have had no problems with my cognitive ability, so Everyman has not had any negative impacts on my learning. My memory has shifted a little though; since I am awake more, the day is split up different and sometimes it feels like "a day and a half" and other times it just feels really long. And also, times like 9PM and 11PM no longer feel so late (9PM feels more like 7:00PM) and its kind of bizarre seeing my friends get really tired when I'm not the slightest bit tired.

Still have been "healthy" in the sense that I've not been sick at all. Not really drowsy, but have the habit of feeling tired and not wanting to get up when I don't have too. Sometimes I don't need to use alarms when I'm on track with naps, but if not then I'll tend to oversleep. The good news is that I'm not being graded on staying exactly on Everyman, and just because I oversleep doesn't mean its "bad", it just means I'm thrown off Everyman a little and nothing more.

So I can generally trust my body to wake up when I need to, and I havn't missed anything important. And the extra hours have helped me with providing enough time to understand and complete my music theory assignments. I was actually more awake during my first music theory test this semester than I was in all of my theory tests last year, and it was at the same time too (8am). The only thing is that it gives a more solitary lifestyle at night, so if you're not one to be spending lots of extra hours potentially away from people (or around people that are asleep) then this might not be for you. And, if you consider doing any type of polyphasic sleep, try to adjust to it when you have little commitments to focus on, like during the summer or something. I just jumped right into this and I was kinda reckless in doing so, but I've been fortunate to actually have been able to adjust to this. So, its been interesting, and I'm definitely digging this change I made to my sleep schedule.

My last post is ironic now, because I've decided to discontinue "Everyman", but still sleep somewhat polyphasically. And I miss dreaming, and will post later why I've decided to discontinue it. Its not that I've "crashed" or burned out, but I've definitely gotten too far off track. And also, like another polyphasic sleeper has said, the rest of the world is not on polyphasic sleep.

This has been my second attempt at doing Everyman, and its certainly been more consistent than last time, and I've been able to get a better feel for it and its implications for the long-term. But there are factors in my living situations that make it difficult to maintain Everyman, as well as by missing naps it greatly affects me. These factors include:

-Having a roommate that is on monophasic sleep
-My roommate and I have different lifestyles and sleep schedules, and it was messing with my willpower to do Everyman
-Not having a convenient room/space to do things in during the late/early hours
-The place I'm staying at is inconveniently far enough from campus that it makes the trips to and from naps longer than it should be
-Not having reliable places to nap
-Not getting to my naps exactly on time because of social situations or eating lunch or dinner longer than usual
-Taking too long to get back to my room to nap or sleep
-The reality that I will miss naps and possibly have to stay awake all night (both of which happened one week) and it significantly throwing me off my schedule and affecting me
-Dream recall hardly improving at all in a period of 4 weeks; I usually didn't remember anything from my core sleeps
-Again, not being close enough to my own room or having my own space

When I was staying strictly to my schedule, I would end up fine, but any deviation from it did affect me in some way. But for me personally, I didn't notice any increase in dream recall or lucid dreaming, I actually noticed a lot less. So if someone is considering Everyman, approach it with an open mind because dream recall and lucid dreaming may or may not increase. However, there are things I did notice on Everyman that I did not notice before on monophasic sleep:

-The movement of a couple planets (Venus and Mercury I think) and the moon throughout the night sky
-The different phases of the moon
-With less of a feel of a day, time was perceived differently and at times seemed longer
-I felt less stressed and a whole lot more calm
-This is speculation, but perhaps sleeping only 4 hours a day (or less) puts you in a form of altered state because you only get necessary deep sleep when you do sleep
-I felt more like myself on Everyman, which doesn't really make sense to me
-I was more awake at night and more outside at night than I was during the day (I'm usually inside most of the day because of my class schedule)
-I began to notice the position of certain stars in the sky and their movements throughout the night because of the Earth's rotation
-Less sleep didn't affect my health in a negative way as far as I can tell
-At times I felt a little funny and goofy, probably because I was only sleeping 4 hours a day
-Even though I was only sleeping 4 hours a day, I was able to function the same if not a little better since I was feeling less tired

So, it has its pros and cons. It has its place and it can be done, but it takes the effort and willpower for it to be done. Will people agree with Everyman? Possibly. Will some people thing you're crazy for doing it? Probably. Should what other people think about you doing Everyman stop you from doing it? Definitely not.

I would say that from this past experience, polyphasic sleep definitely works, but you have to have reasons for doing it (otherwise it'll be difficult finding the will to get out of bed or up from naps) and that it should fit within some kind of schedule.

Oh, and since I want to lucid dream and astral project, and since my level of dream recall was almost at 0, a modified version of monophasic sleep would be better for me. I still like napping too, so yeah, going to figure out something that'll still work for me.

I've actually gotten sick with something (supposedly upper respiratory and sinuses) and have had it since Sunday, so not sure if its related to Everyman or not. I was around sick people before so thats why I'm confused as to why I've gotten sick now. There have been significant weather changes lately, and I was around another of my friends who was sick, so maybe thats it. I just know switching back from Everyman has been one of the biggest changes, so maybe the lack of sleep is contributing to my immune system crashing, but hopefully it'll pass within the next couple days.

I have still been on monophasic sleep, and just now getting completely better. Turns out I had some form of bronchitis and fever, and on a couple inhalers now so I've gotten a ton better the past few days. It seems like it could have been a combination of things that made me sick, although I won't rule out the possibility of a shock my body went through suddenly going back to monophasic. And I did not tell the doctor I went from polyphasic back to monophasic or that I was changing my sleep schedule, but I did say that I was not getting very much sleep due to stress (because it was the campus doctor and I did not want to get lectured on why polyphasic sleep is bad for you/doesn't work) and they got really "Oh no, that's not good, you need sleep!" type of attitude.

But I was fine during my 3 (or 4) week period of Everyman so it doesn't make sense to me why I suddenly just got really sick coming off of it, although it does when I think of it in terms of the seasons changing, lots of students here being sick as well, changing from Everyman back to monophasic, and possibly not giving my body enough time to rest. The fact that I was not remembering my dreams from my core sleeps shows me that my body and mind were more focused on repairing and refreshing my body overnight. I don't know, again I say that this thread is not as scientific as others and I really think there needs to be a official experiment done on polyphasic sleep.

I've gotten over my sickness and so I feel fine again, except that I'm having trouble feeling awake enough and getting enough sleep :(. But, I've definitely moved back to monophasic, and although I'm struggling to get enough sleep again, the trade-off is that I don't have to worry about oversleeping during naps anymore. Relying on 20-minute naps is intense when its the only sleep you are getting, so its been nice not having to focus on making all these naps. Think I have other issues and factors influencing why I'm so tired during the day, and Everyman (or any other polyphasic sleep schedule) is not the answer for me.
