      Moved to sleep and health.

I tried to go poly before but I just couldn't make it work with my schedule.

I heard that it's actually not very good for you. Coz you need the sleep which you miss out on with this type of sleep.

But isnt it rem sleep that you need? And with that kind of sleeping you enter directly into it

There isn't definitive proof that it is healthy or unhealthy, much of it is all pure speculation because of the lack of long term studies performed. Here's a link though, if that might help.

Well, yeah that's the theory. But allegedly you also need the non-REM sleep.

But, as I said, I just heard this (from my brother), I haven't read any studies. I'll have to ask him where he read that from though.

You get both NREM and REM sleep on polyphasic, and you do not enter directly into it.

      Mechanics of Polyphasic Sleep

I couldn't find any studies proving one way or another, but I know they are out there. I remember reading them awhile ago. That link should help though.

When I was doing poly, I wanted to see when I was going into REM so I video taped myself sleeping. It was really strange. You could see when I went into REM.

Since most naps of polyphasic are slightly different from the last, I could see how one might enter REM sleep nearly instantaneously, though.

Hm, it appears I've been misinformed. I will read the link tomorrow coz I'm gonna need to sleep pretty soon coz I barely got any sleep last night.

That's interesting that you taped it. Do you have them online? Or could you upload them somewhere?

Hmmm. It's been a really long time since I did that, so I don't know if the tape is even in existence anymore. I'm not sure if I would want to upload it though, cause even when I watched it I felt a little creepy.

I'll check though when I get home from vacation.

That 3x 60m schedule suggested in post #5 looks interesting. It would be hell though waiting 8 hours for the next nap when trying to adapt straight from monophasic. It might make it easier to start with 6x 60m naps and gradually decrease it to 3. But there's also the problem of it being harder to wake up from naps that are too far over 30m unless you've adapted to it(if possible).

I'm a biphasic sleeper but it hasn't been working for me lately. I'm switching back to mono.

I go one cycle of 4 hours sleeping, 4 awake, 4 sleeping.

I can't fall back asleep fast enough for the second sleep so it always ended up being 2 hours instead of 4.
(It might be because I'm on accutane which is known to cause insomnia)

I was on byphasic sleep for maybe 2 months - 6h30 at night + 20mins nap in the afternoon - and now I'm trying a "Everyman" polyphasic schedule - 3-4 h night + 3x 20 mins naps during the day followed by one hour meditation (the meditation is my own addition).
I'm doing it because I want the extra time, particularly because I want to expand my daily meditation from 2 to 3-4 hours and can't afford to rob those hours to my normal schedule which is already overwhelmed.
This is my first day on polyphasic and so far, so good!
I had only 2 naps yesterday instead of 3 and I couldn't actually sleep (was a bit anxious), but it was the first time, so it's normal. Went to bed at 1:00 and let myself sleep for about 4 hours. I didn't even need the alarm clock to wake up. Around 5 am I was up and I felt the usual sleepiness after waking up, but not harder than usual. I've done a lot of work already, had breakfast and I'm heading to my first nap of the day between 8:30 and 9 am. It is still very early to say it's a success, but I feel I have good chances with this!

3 hour core (4~7 AM) 1 hour 30 min nap (5-6:30 pm) 30 min nap 11-11:30 . Been doing this for about a year and a half , I dont use alarms anymore and feels natural. I dont feel tired during my waking hours and falling asleep is realy fast. I lost about 2.5 kgs but I have a steady wheight for the past 3 months . Also as a warning , youre gona stay up more and going to need more fuel , so yeah prepare to add a midnight snack.

For begginers I would advice bi-phasic sleep with a 4 hour and 30 min core and 1 hour nap. Schedule them so that its stable and concistant. Ask for help to stay awake, adaptation weeks are hellish .

What do you think the benefits of polyphasic sleep are apart from the fact you sleep a bit less?

In 3 weeks polyphasic, I lost 4 kgs. I eat more frequently, but much smaller meals - actually, mostly snacks instead of meals. That and the extra activity made me lost weight pretty fast. But now it also seems to have stabilized.

can you push tis cycle by one hour - Yes, I don't have rigid times for the naps. Sometimes I just wait for the natural sleepiness to settle instead of sticking to a pre-determined hour.

do you have the feeling that you have much more time - Definitely yes

DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR DREAMS MORE? - No, actually I recall less and have to make a bigger effort to recall at least one each night, but I think it's because I'm still adjusting to it and also for personal reasons that are affecting my sleep.

do you get lucids easier? - No, I had a few half-lucids but only one good lucid in 3 weeks, which for me is quite a bad result. But I believe it's possible, once my mind gets used to the schedule and put again more focus on my dreams instead of just the sleep rhythm.

You can add any adjustments you want to youre sleeping schedule . Make sure though that its a bit spread apart , the more spread apart the shorter you can make the naps .
A core rule would be to keep them as stable as possible . By that I mean you have to keep the sleeping times consistent . So adjust youre schedule for something that works al the week .
I would recommend at least 2 months of biphasic sleep before going to 3phase or more so 4 phase sleeping schedules .
A good biphasic schedule should have a 4 hour 30 min core and 1 hour nap .

I keep on trying different schedules and variations. The 3 naps were ok, but it gets in the way when I have a busy day moving from place to place. So I'm trying other options, closer to Nataj sleep cycle, to see if I prefer it better. Because of the switch, I'm now feeling tired and with difficulties in concentrating, but I hope it gets better and I find the best schedule for me.
