Did I witness the first seconds of sleep?

Today I was so tired after I was forced to wake up early that I went back to bed just to lay down. At one point, all I can remember was that I had the feeling of sitting at my computer and experiencing a complete power outage. Everything went completely black and it scared the shit out of me so I woke up.

Was it the first few seconds of entering a dream?

Absolutely!! Every once in a while, usually if I'm really tired or my sleep schedule is weirdly disupted, it happens to me without even trying. What you want to do is learn to recognize that state and don't get excited when it happens again - just recognize it for what it is and relax and watch the dream form and go into motion around you.

Ahh noooooooooo. Crap man if I knew that when it happened I probably wouldn't have woken up.

I'm gonna start waking up earlier than I usually do just to feel more tired through out the day, and then try this again!

Ever try the WBTB technique? It can be a good method. Same with DEILD.

Tutorials for both are available in the WIKI.

Yeah I actually tried it today. I had a really vivid dream and typed it down right after I woke up from it and then went back to bed. Unfortunately I had no success with trying to become lucid, but maybe I was focused on the wrong thing (which was trying to go back into the dream).
