      REM Sleep and Cannabis Use

      Hello everyone,

This is my first post here and the reason why i became a member of DV.

I have been reading quite a bit about LD and want to start doing it on a regular basis. (I actually had a DILD once or twice, only one time after reading more about LD. )

The thing is, i am a Cannabis user. Spare me all the comments that don't help my question, i have heard them all, and i even read them in the dozen threads concerning my doubt here at DV.

After all that reading i realized that most people have an impaired REM sleep when they use MJ but there are some who still maintain the ability to recall and to dream, which is a sign of the REM phase being present.

I also gathered some information to help a healthy sleep pattern and more important, to restore your REM phase:

      - Smoke 4-7hours before going to bed
      - Lower the usage, both daily and with the help of T-breaks
      - Schedule the LD and then stop smoking 3 days before

I want to ask my fellow forum members and cannabis lovers what else can you suggest in their daily routines that helps you achieve this and how many use the tips i wrote above.

      Hope you can help me,

I am loving the forum so far!

The reason that you read of people who can lucid dream and smoke is because they gave it up, mastered lucid dreaming and then proceeded smoking. I still think that with determination you shouldn't have too much problems becoming lucid, it might take a while longer to get them consistently though.

Thanks Dutchraptor , i can't recall someone specifically saying they stopped MJ use to master Lucid Dreaming but i suppose it makes sense for most people. Still, i think i recall reading some posts where they said they never had problems trying to lucid dream as long as they followed certain "rules", that i mentioned in my original post.

And also, my interest in this subject is beyond Lucid Dreaming since i ask this for health reasons as well.

No one has answered yet, so i will have to double post, hope it is not a problem mods.

Yesterday i used MJ about 4-5h before sleeping. When i went to bed i had more trouble sleeping than usual, it took me about 10min to fall asleep.

I don't recall dreaming until 6am, by then my sleep was getting lighter and when i woke up i remembered my dream but only the last part.

I know i dreamt more than i remember but it still feels like i am making some progress.

I still woke up with a little heavy eyes, and i slept about 7-8h so i will try again today.

100 views and still no one can help me?

I did it again today, only smoked one time during the day, about 5hours before sleeping. It was much harder to go to sleep this time, than yesterday.. which is funny since i smoked the same amount as the day before and at the same time (8pm), only had 2 coffees and the last one was at 5pm. My guess is that somehow, i have less cannabinoids in my system and my body is readjusting.

After i fell asleep, i was sound asleep until early morning, which was when i started to have a lighter sleep ( i always sleep with my curtain windows open so i awoke with daylight, don't know if this is good..), and my alarm went off at 7.30am and 8.30am.

Before 7.30am i was having a dream which i recalled when the alarm sounded and i was able to get back to it once i resumed sleeping. The same happened at 8.30am. I woke up at 9am.
Right now, i have almost no recollection of the dream (i have to start my dream journal since it seems from the answers in the forum it is not only a LD aid but more a LD requisit) but what i find interesting about this night is the fact that i was somewhat aware of being on a dream, especially after i woke up the first time, but i could not enter my dream in the 1st person, but i felt closer than yesterday.

I also have been wondering about doing a week with no alcohol, coffee, sweets and MJ and see how it affects my overall daily life and my dream patterns. Has anyone tried this?

I don't drink more than 1-2 glasses of wine at meals and the occasional beer since it is summer, coffe only in the morning and after lunch and sweets i pretty much cut alltogether. Apart from alcohol i always had trouble controling myself, when i was a kid i overindulged my sweets and sugary beverages and in college i tend to drink a lot of coffee, so this new self-control is very positive for me.
Any dreamers share the same concerns as i do?

This is also my first post, and reason for becoming a member. I quit smoking for 3 months after 17 years of daily use. Those 3 months were the most active REM sleep of my entire life! I even enjoyed the nightmares, which were as insightful as they were vivid. I started sleeping about 4 or 6 hours daily, but would have lots of REM sleep with 2 or 3 vivid dreams every night that could easily be recalled, even days later. I began to feel more rested on 4 hours of sober sleep than with 8 hours of stoned sleep. I had more energy during the day, and felt like my dreams were guiding me and showing me things that I overlooked. I began to LD every night using techniques like "Is this a dream?" and "What was I just doing?" If I suspected I might be dreaming, I would try to fly. This usually resulted in a Lucid Dream, and often could turn any nightmare into a LD.

Unfortunately, after 3 months I started smoking again, and I have had difficulty recalling any dreams lately. Smokers can still dream, but they are not as lucid and are much harder to recall after waking. I plan to quit again, and I recommend that smokers limit smoking to the weekends if possible, because daily use inhibits dreaming.

With that said, during those 3 months I found that you can still have vivid lucid dreams on alcohol, and coffee only seems to delay the onset of sleep itself. I have a friend who can Lucid Dream after smoking, but he usually needs to use something like 5-HTP or Melatonin to allow the dream to be vivid enough for recall. L-tyrosine and choline may also help with lucid dreaming, and maybe a small dose of DHEA if used with your doctors consent. (Not recommended for people under 40!)

I quit smoking 2 months ago after ~4 years of chronic use (smoking all day, usually around two grams or so tapering off at the end). To me it's painfully obvious that weed to some extant inhibits pretty much any kind of dream work. I was able to have lucid dreams during that time, but my dreams are much longer and more detailed now. I'm probably going to start indulging again in a month or so, but (hopefully) at a more conservative frequency. The thing about cannabinoids is that they stay in your system for so long, which has both upsides and downsides. I'd say I felt it affecting my life (waking and sleeping) for at least a month after I quit.

Yes. Do it. It's important to know how these things affect you, and they probably affect you more heavily than you actively notice. I'd suggest you try to do more than a week, but I know it's hard.

Basically drugs are bad. But they're also a lot of fun, so we gotta balance it out.

also, welcome to the forum rayrife and dorrange

Weed can help with the ADA (all day awareness) technique. Smoking weed is like turning your awareness "on". Look up King Yoshi's guide on the ADA

@adventure time - please stop promoting weed as lucid dreaming aid. Btw, OP asked the question year ago, no need to bump old posts like you did with your other reply just to talk about weed. Locked.
