It seems as though if i sleep facing the wall I always have a nightmare, sleeping away from it i either good/bad/neutral or no dream and on my back i dont dream at all, why might this be??

Either it's a placebo effect or it might be caused because of your surroundings at your bed side. But I'm guessing that you've just told yourself this, and you move like every 45 minutes during the night.
It seems that your subconscious is influenced to give the appropriate dreams. e.g nightmares facing the wall happen because you cannot see if the room is safe etc.
