Yes animals do suffer from sleep deprivation just like humans, which result in poorer cognitive capacity and problems regulating temperature, among other problems (like increased arousal). Many tests were made in mice regarding sleep deprivation. Animals actually share several characteristics of sleep with us. For example, most (if not all) mammals have REM sleep, some birds do, but reptiles don't. And human infants are only the 6th on the list when it comes for animals that most sleep during the 24hours period. |
