I heard id people using SSILD to calm down and get relaxed instead of using it especially for lucid dreaming. I tried this and it helped me very well, because I forgot what was around me. Mostly, all this thoughts in your head block you from sleeping.
Does it take you 1-2 hours at bedtime or middle of the night wakings? On a typical night I get to sleep fairly quickly in my initial position, maybe changing position at most once. The closer it gets to morning the longer it can take me to get back to sleep, and I may need to change position several times. I find I can hold a position about 30 minutes before needing to change it if I don't fall asleep.
I recommend googling and reading up on these things and following through with them:
- sleep-promoting foods (magnesium [almonds, nuts, spinach, etc.], tryptophan+carbs snack, bananas, sour cherries, etc.)
- sleeping habits (schedule, room arrangement, getting out of bed if you're not sleepy, reading to get tired, etc.)
- meditation -- builds concentration, learn to deflect thoughts
- relaxation -- discovering where your body (and mind) holds tension and constantly letting them go
- exercise (early in the day)
- melatonin (I generally only use it when I feel really alert or worried/stressed at bedtime [1mg], or when planning a REM rebound dreaming session in the later half of the night [3mg])
I find I fall asleep fastest when I think only about "letting go" -- of all physical and mental tension. On every breath, I try to let more and more physical and mental tension go, let it flow out...
Are you tired at the end of the day? If not, try more intense physical and mental activity.
Thanks for that frying man! I'll definately look at your advice! it usually takes 1-2 for me too sleep at bedtime AND nightime awakenings!
