      Insomnia Sucks! Help!

This year my insomnia has gotten worse. The Dr. wanted to give me Xanax but I don't want to take any drugs if possible. Last month I had two nights I didn't sleep at all. Last night I got 1 1/2 hours of sleep. I went to bed an hour early so I could get a decent nights sleep. I am averaging 5 hours at most and have to be up for work at 5 am at the latest. Last night I tried everything. I even took 3mg of melatonin to see if that would work because I have read that helps you fall asleep. Nope. Wide awake. I laid in bed and tried to fall asleep. I cleared my mind, tried visualization, tried tightening my body and then letting it all go and breathing, seeing colors and changing them, feeling my body laying there too aware of every sense I have, my senses seem to be extremely sensitive, so I focused on my hearbeat that I could hear and feel, the sensation of the fan on my skin, on and on and on, that always relaxes me but it sure didn't put me to sleep. Could it be I am too excited to fall asleep and wanting so badly to remember my dreams that I sabotage myself? The strange thing is I feel a little lightheaded but I am not exhausted. I think it might just be mind over matter because I know I have to go to work and I know it is going to be a very busy day for me so I have to do it.
I can't blame lack of sleep on my dogs because they didn't keep me awake last night.
Please give me your advice! I am willing to try anything other than drugs!

P.S. I do a lot of walking, running, and riding bikes so exercise is fine this is my norm.

I think that lack of sleep is because of habituation. If you have slept 3 weeks 4-5 hours and the last day of the month you wanted to sleep 8 hours, you might sleep 8 hours, but its likely that you will sleep 4-5 hours because of the habituation. The longer it has been like that, the most likely you will sleep those ammount of hours even if you wanted to sleep more. This is not determinism however, since you in fact can change that, but maybe not out of expectation but by some other action. Try not sleeping 8 hours a day but instead try something like 6 hours. Then when you feel confortable try adding one more hour. That way you will make progress and eventually reach what you aimed for.

I would recommend not to get any medication, if you are firm with your determination stick with it. I would also recommend not to insist with melatonin because then, in my opinion, it would be harder to produce it naturally.

Also i recommend try to do some meditation before going to sleep everyday. Lets say you go to sleep at 12. Do meditation at 10 for half an hour or one hour. Then one hour free time and then you can go to sleep. If you don't do it everynight, then try meditating when you can't fall asleep. If you don't feel confident you can try lying in bed, just focusing on your object of meditation, the first times. And then when you have practiced like a week or some time like this you could try like a WBTB just to meditate half an hour or whatever time you set in sitting position.

I hope that helped... take care.

How about trying some herbal medicine - if you don't want to go down the allopathic route why not seek out a good holistic doctor ....maybe a friend can recomend someone in your area ; for example a Herbalist or an Accupuncturist or a Cranial Osteopath ...see what's available maybe

      Good luck :

I often find it hard to sleep as well, but it does have a silver lining. I often wake up many times during the night which gives me a lot of practice for WILD, and in general makes lucid dreaming much easier.

On the flip side, I sometimes wake up at 1am, and stay in bed for the next 6 hours trying desperately to sleep. Do you have any caffeine? I stopped and it makes things (a tiny bit) better. I find that 'trying' to sleep is often your worst enemy. One 'tries' and when this fails one gets angry and frustrated. I used to. Don't try and get to sleep but just go with it.

Or you could, you know, do push ups before sleep. It works most of the time.
