If my sister is not sleeping in the same bedroom when I go to sleep I can't sleep. I have always been afraid off the dark, I really don't see this going away. I am not afraid of anything, how can I get rid off fear off the dark. Before you ask I don't suffer from anything like physical abuse, sexual or anything like that. Currently I am trying self hypnosis, however it not doing anything. If I am on my own and I try to get asleep at night, their is the feeling of I am going to get attacked by something, which I can't stop.

Bullying? Askin someone's age is bullying? What a tough world. I wonder what actually bullying someone is then, murder level?

Grow up a bit and have a taste of the outside world, you'll find that it's harsh, and if you can't take someone asking your age you definately have to go out more. And yes, that last statement could be seen as "bullying", but for the love of God, it's so true.

Well I say I have a phobia of the dark, and you ask what my age. Your basically calling me a baby for something I can't control, thats not nice in my book. Well if wrote I was fat and then you reply how many cup cakes do you eat that would be bullying. And so would calling someone a babt because they have a phobia.

Uh, yeah, because I was curious. Not as in "How old are you, baby?". And if you wrote you were fat and I would ask you how many cupcakes you'd eat a day that would be totally different, unless asking people how many cupcakes they eat a day is something you do every time you meet new people. And yes, I am inclined to know people's age.

I never had an "I'm older" act, and I never expected to be older, but jesus christ you do sound like a baby, and I don't mean because of the phobia but because of all your whining about the littlest things.

I'm also "scared" of the dark. I think it's because of my HI. It's really hard to fall asleep if you keep getting disturbing imagery and stuff. So for me it's much easyer to fall asleep if there is at least a bit of light coming from somewhere. It's usually not that bad, if it is I just listen to some music and that helps me detach myself from hypnagogia.
It's just some images + the slight natural fear of the dark, in my opinion, for me anyway. I don't know about you, just forget about the dark and you'll be ok.

Oh and I'm 16 and have never eaten a cupcake.

It looks like I need to be the mature one and end this stupid conversation. Who's the whinner person then the baby or the person who argues with a baby.

I will give listening to music a try.

Do some searching on the 'net on NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming. Look specifically for the Reframing techniques and their application to phobias. It's fast... and it's worked for me.

Seriously, if anything, you need to watch your warning levels. Noone was disrespectful to you, and accusing someone baselessly of harrassing you is the same as crying wolf. Don't do it, and be respectful if you'd like to get respect.

Wendy, did you used to have night terrors as a kid or really bad nightmares (there is a difference) when you were a kid? If you did, perhaps you carried some of that into adulthood. It seems like it'd have to be possible.
And this may sound a little stupid, but perhaps you should get a pet. They usually make people feel more secure.

Actually I've realised recently (maybe since I discovered LDing) that I love being in the dark!
      I feel like I'm just a though....

Before I would ask myself: "what if there is something under my bed, what if...." but now I feel I could destroy anything that could bother me so....I love it now.

There should be a rule about replying in a topic with very offtopic posts. If your intention is to argue, there is a PM system. He has a problem, HELP HIM OR DONT REPLY.

Anyways, I know how you feel. Im 16 and also have this (not to mention bee/anything that flies and 'buzzes' fobia). But I can go to sleep alone because I can convince myself that being afraid is nonesense.

Like... When I have to go to the bathroom in the night, I go.. And then I have to walk some stairs to get to my room. To get to the stairs I have to go through the living room. You cant imagine what a chilly feeling I get like someones watching me / somethings going to happen.

I suggest you snuggle up with your blanket so your nice and warm because being cold intensifies the fear.

      Good Luck!

i have that a little as well, luckily my room is lit up a little by street lights.

Being afraid of the dark is probably in everyones instincts. You can't see properly and so yes if you lived out in the wild there's a big risk of being attacked.

Anyway i think the cause of my slight fear and nightmares when i was young is that i was in an incubator for four months after being born. I think that maybe that isolation was set into me, which is why i dont like being alone when going to sleep and wish for someone to sleep with .

I also have the problem were anything i look at becomes scary at night. So i'll stare at a jumper in the corner of my room and it will be an animals head, or little patterns in my wall paper will be mean faces, etc.

The best thing to do is read or something before going to sleep so your thinking about that. Thats all i can think of *huggles*

iv had alot of problems with beeing scared of being alone in the house (worst at night). Im affraid that something or someone is there, and can see me. something that i cannot see, and my biggest fear is that i will see it.

Telling myself that its not real doesnt really help, cuz i really belive that there are ghosts/spirits around us.

this has given me alot of problems sleeping, cus im constantly worrying that there is something in my room/house. and i keep opening my eyse to check.. sometimes it frightens me so much i have to get up from bed and just watch tv a few hours until it calms down.

All this may be cus of some weird/scary things that happend to me as a kid, like i saw stuff and felt a present. real or not, i dunno. but i think thats the reason i still have these problems.

Now, there is something that has helped me, allmost to the point that i dont worry about it at all anymore (few times i still do but like 5% of the time only). Its called TFT (Thought Field Therapy). i know it works for beeing afraid of darkness aswell, and it might be something you wanna try.

(TFT has allso helped me with alot of my other problems like anxiety and depressions, and have helped me get rid of a antipsycotic med iv been on for 3years allmos), so yea, it really can do wonders!

I used to be scared of the dark til I was fourteen (I'm fifteen now). I broke myself of it by leaving the bathroom light on and my door wide open. I hated having my door open more than the dark, so I would pull it to instead so only a crick of light came through. Eventually, I was able to close the door completely. Now I don't even have to have to see the bathroom light underneath the door. It took a couple of months, but adjust yourself to it and you can do it.

LISTEN UP YA BABIES(just kidding ):
First of all, this fear is very common and is known by a variety of names: Achluophobia, Lygophobia, Myctophobia, Nyctophobia, Scotophobia, Fear of the Dark, and Fear of Darkness being the most common.

      STEP 1:
Explore exactly what it is you are afraid of about the object or situation. Is there some underlying reason that you are avoiding the object or situation? Is there something you gain by avoiding the object or situation (besides avoiding the fear or anxiety)?

      STEP 2:
Learn how to relax and calm yourself. There are many ways to do this. Here is one method: Take a slow deep breath into your belly to the count of six and then breathe out slowly to the count of six. Practice this daily for five minutes; increase over time to 20 minutes.

      STEP 3:
Make a list starting with the feared object or situation - for example, driving on freeways. Then, write down what object or situation would be slightly less anxiety-producing - for example, driving on small highways.

      STEP 4:
Explore exactly what it is you are afraid of. Is there some underlying reason or past event that causes you to avoid an object or situation? Is there something you gain by avoiding it (besides avoiding the fear or anxiety)?

      STEP 5:
      To be continued...

Im scared of fear, when i think of the situation, im not thinking of pain or death, im thinking of fear. Like if i was to see a ghost, then i would be scared, so i like to keep the light on. But i still enjoy horror movies. lol.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!
You could probably see this coming from a mile away.
But... how many people stop to really interpret this short sentence? Although short, the message isn't.
